  • Santa Barbara sisters Valerie Edelheit and Sonia Rifkind launched Every Child Supported, a new in-home coaching service designed to help families deal with neurodivergence and other parenting challenges.   • Flipcause — a California donation-processing company — filed for bankruptcy on Dec. 19 and now owes Central Coast nonprofits $526K, with local group 805UndocuFund still waiting for $352,500 to support families; an auction for the company is set for March 3.  Noozhawk

  • The Santa Barbara County Office of Arts invites the community to a free closing reception for Fare Trade and Iconic Santa Barbara Papel Picado exhibits at City Hall Gallery (735 Anacapa St) on Friday, Jan. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring live poetry readings by local poets.  Noozhawk
  • Actress Kate Hudson will receive the Arlington Artist of the Year Award at the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Friday, Feb. 13. The award, announced Tuesday (Jan. 13), honors her long film career.  KSBY

  • Hope School District is guiding all volunteers through an online mandated reporter training course required by Senate Bill 848; the rule applies to every adult helping in public + private schools.  KEYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Clean Energy launched a Govcentives tool on Jan. 7 to help residents find rebates and programs for home and vehicle electrification. By entering a zip code and basic home details, residents can access federal, state, and local incentives (including HVAC support).  Santa Barbara Independent
  • An international team of scientists has created a framework to compare marine darkwaves — short periods of underwater darkness that affect kelp forests and seagrass beds. Researchers analyzed 16 years of data from the Santa Barbara Coastal LTER and other sites to help coastal conservation efforts.  Noozhawk
  • Only two monarch butterflies were seen at Ellwood Mesa in January as heavy rains & high temperatures hurt breeding; city officials plan to complete the final count on Jan. 30 to guide conservation efforts.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County supervisors approved a 72-hour noise ordinance for Deltopia on Tuesday that bans amplified music during Isla Vista’s unsanctioned street party while allowing permitted events (IVCSD will use its own funds for a safer celebration) aimed at reducing crowd risks and emergency responses.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation presents today a preliminary design for reimagining Franceschi House to the Historic Landmarks Commission. The design, developed from community input, honors horticulturist Francesco Franceschi, with city funds covering planning studies but not construction.  Edhat
  • Residents with property damage from recent storms are urged to file a report with the Office of Emergency Management to help officials secure state and federal assistance. Those with questions may call (805) 681-5526.  Edhat
  • Buellton City Council approved a $1,500 plan on Jan. 8 to install DIY pet microchip scanners at Paws Park, City Hall, and a local humane society to help reunite lost pets with their owners using a buy four, get one free deal from the Santa Barbara County Animal Care Foundation (aiming to reduce shelter intakes). The scanners will be mounted in public areas to streamline quick pet recovery.  Edhat
  • Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service resumed Tuesday (Jan. 13) along the Gaviota Coast after a week-long closure due to storm damage. Union Pacific completed emergency repairs and safety checks as connection buses maintained service between Goleta and San Luis Obispo.  Edhat
