  • Santa Barbara Foundation is inviting nominations for its 83rd Annual Person of the Year awards, asking community members to submit names for an individual, couple or group that made a local impact. Submissions are now open.  Noozhawk
  • In 2025 Santa Barbara Humane helped over 45,000 animals by supporting 2,223 adoptions, veterinary visits, and pet food distributions while breaking ground in December on a new modern campus following over $15 million in donations. CULTURE NEWS

  • Edgar Meyer performed with Tessa Lark and Joshua Roman at Hahn Hall on January 8, 2026, unveiling new trio compositions and revising earlier works during a dynamic Mariposa series concert.   • On Jan. 14, the film festival unveiled its 41st annual poster by local artist Baret Boisson (a 10-year resident) at Sullivan Goss Art Gallery; on Feb. 4, the festival will begin at New McHurley Film Center with world and U.S. premieres and upgraded Dolby Atmos projection.  Edhat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • E.J. Raad, the Associated Students External Vice President, spent his fall quarter opposing a noise ordinance that canceled Deltopia and finishing the Rate My Landlord website to aid students — his office also promoted free mobile vision tests, food security initiatives and a lease pre-qualifier program to address basic needs.  Daily Nexus
  • Today, the UCSB Sherwin Group uses its 10 m accelerator in the physics department to generate terahertz pulses for research into quantum computing and biophysics. The team precisely adjusts the free electron laser daily to probe electron behavior in materials.  Daily Nexus

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During fall quarter, A.S. Internal Vice President Enri Lala advocated for a bike path and lagoon lighting after a campus safety incident and introduced a service act to bring Bloomberg Terminals for economics students. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from the 2025 fourth quarter show that Santa Barbara City's median home selling price dropped to about $2.05 million (compared to rising prices in Carpinteria and Goleta) while apartment rents increased slightly amid a stable job market.  Edhat

SPORTS NEWS

  • San Marcos boys’ soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Santa Barbara on Wednesday night at Peabody Stadium after Sergio Ramirez and Luis Campos scored; the win kept them tied with Oxnard for first in the Channel League.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • San Marcos girls water polo won an 18-3 game against Dos Pueblos on Thursday at the San Marcos pool deck, clinching a share of the Channel League title with an undefeated regular season.   • Dos Pueblos wrestling celebrated Alumni Night with a 57-20 win over Rio Mesa on Wednesday at Sovine Gym & powered by falls and decision wins. Dos Pueblos will meet Santa Barbara High next Wednesday while other local dual meets delivered mixed outcomes.  Noozhawk
  • A local nonprofit, Blind Fitness, is partnering with golf coaches to host an adaptive golf classic at Sandpiper Golf Course on January 27.
