  • Santa Barbara County Animal Services and BUNS are celebrating Valentine’s season by waiving adoption fees for rabbits and guinea pigs until Feb. 15; potential pet parents can meet the animals at shelters in Santa Barbara, Lompoc, and Santa Maria from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Eyes in the Sky of the Audubon Society will host a celebration of life for Max, a cherished great horned owl, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the museum’s Fleischmann Auditorium (free event honors his legacy in environmental education).  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture will accept applications for the 2026 Arts Making Impact Grant Tuesday, Jan. 20. Nonprofits and artists with fiscal sponsorship may apply for up to $5,000 (workshops Feb. 11 and March 10, deadline March 20) and projects run July 1 to June 30.  Edhat
  • Art & Soul Contemporary Gallery in Santa Barbara will present Rod Lathim’s immersive exhibition ‘LIT: Love, Illumination, Transcendence’ on Feb. 5 from 5-8 p.m. at 1323 State St. (The exhibit runs during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and hosts workshops on Feb. 11, 21, and 27.)  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara Charter School is seeking a seven-year renewal of its charter with the school district, with a review report due by Feb. 9 and a board decision set for Feb. 24. Parents praised the school’s focus on arts education (and holistic learning) during a recent public hearing.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Friday night, environmental advocates gathered at the Hub — a local venue — to oppose federal plans to reopen Southern California waters to six offshore lease sales beginning in 2027. The event, hosted by the Environmental Defense Center and featuring Ted Danson, urged public comments by Jan. 23.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Isla Vista Community Services District elected all-woman board leaders — Katherine Carmichael as president and Kylan Hobart as vice president — to guide local services.  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • UCSB’s women’s basketball team lost 67-50 to Hawaiʻi in Honolulu Saturday. The loss dropped the Gauchos’ record to 13-3 + they will try to bounce back in a 7 p.m. game at Cal Poly on Thursday.  Noozhawk
  • The UC Santa Barbara men’s basketball team beat Hawai’i 77-62 at the Thunderdome last Saturday, with Aidan Mahaney leading crucial scoring. The win moved the Gauchos (11-7) into a tie for third in Big West and set up a home game against Cal Poly Thursday at 6 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • The UC Santa Barbara men’s volleyball team swept The Master’s University 3-0 in their season opener Friday night, winning all three sets. The Gauchos will face No. 11 Stanford at Maple Pavilion in the Bay Area on Thursday, Jan. 22 and Friday, Jan. 23.  Noozhawk
