BUSINESS NEWS

  • Open Air Bicycles, a long-serving bike shop at 135 East Carrillo Street, is set to close by March 31 unless a new owner takes over the business. Owner Ed Brown, who has run the shop since 2010, said the store is liquidating its inventory with discounts up to 75 percent.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • UCSB Theatre presents Animal Farm, an adaptation of George Orwell's allegory, from Feb. 20-22 at Hatlen Theater. The play uses raw storytelling to connect local sentiments about power and control + reflects challenges tied to a rising local militia influence.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On Feb. 6, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival hosted filmmaker Q&As at film centers + Riviera Theatre, featuring films like MOCKBUSTER, MAYSOON, and DEAR LARA with sessions led by directors and producers.   • On Thursday at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, actor Adam Sandler accepted the Maltin Modern Master Award and recounted his start in stand-up comedy and roles in hits like The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore (he later mingled with fans at In-N-Out) while Dustin Hoffman presented the award.  Noozhawk
  • At its 63rd annual meeting held in January at El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation elected Andrew Le & Qing Xue to the board and presented awards for historic preservation work.   • Ensemble Theatre Company opens The Shark Is Broken today in Santa Barbara with performances reimagining the chaos of filming Jaws (a love letter to cinema) while three actors portray famed movie stars on a replica boat; the run extends until Feb. 22 and coincides with the local film festival.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has named mammal expert Ally Coconis its new curator of mammalogy. She plans to use the museum’s collection to research small mammals’ roles in post-fire landscapes (emphasizing historical biodiversity and local ecosystem changes).  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Notre Dame School in Santa Barbara will mark its centennial on Friday, May 29 with a Commemorative Mass at 5:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and a Gala at 6:30 p.m. in its historic auditorium; community members are encouraged to RSVP online.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The FAA cleared SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket for today's launch at Vandenberg Space Force Base between 9:05 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. to send 25 Starlink satellites into orbit, following a glitch that delayed Friday’s launch (the investigation confirmed corrective measures).  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cottage Health has named Katy Bazylewicz as the inaugural Werft Fellow for Innovative Leadership; she will launch a project at Hale House in London to connect startups with top healthcare professionals and advance community care.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara County Health and the Sheriff’s Office advise residents to avoid foods, supplements or drinks containing Kratom or (7-OH) due to risks of addiction, overdose and death. In 2025, two fatal overdoses were linked to these illegal products that still appear in local shops, gas stations and online.  Noozhawk

  • The downtown Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum at 21 West Anapamu St is listed for sale at $3.9 million but will remain open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday as the family consolidates locations to focus on its flagship site in St. Augustine (Florida).  Santa Barbara Independent

  • The Austrian national soccer team will use UCSB’s Harder Stadium as its training site during FIFA World Cup 2026 in Goleta. The team will stay at Ritz-Carlton Bacara and arrive this summer following a base camp agreement approved on Jan. 12 (supporting local economic benefits).  Edhat
