  • The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara will distribute $1,375,000 in grants to local nonprofits that help women, children and families, with projects selected by a committee and the awards announced on May 13 at Lobero Theatre — reflecting the community’s shared support.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • The area now known as Chase Palm Park did not exist a century ago when private cottages lined the waterfront until the city bought parcels in 1926 to open public access, as noted by historian Betsy J. Green (author).  Edhat
  • UC Santa Barbara Library is hosting a new exhibition called 'Creating Community Through Books: 20 Years of UCSB Reads' on the first floor Ocean Gallery until Dec. 11— the display features original posters, selected books and testimonials that highlight 20 years of connecting the campus and community.  Edhat
  • Joe DeLise discussed Santa Barbara’s history of switching from gas lamps to electric streetlights at the Mission Archive-Library on Laguna Street, sharing colorized photos and engaging a large crowd of local history enthusiasts with a detailed Q&A.   • Santa Barbara Symphony announced winners of its 2026 Youth Concerto Competition after auditions on January 25 at Westmont College (Julian Carrera on trombone, Seungyoo Kim-Jung on violin, and Damian Magaña on flute); the winners will perform as featured soloists with the Youth Symphony next season.  Edhat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wilderness Youth Project and Sea League have partnered to offer Big Blue Bridge Spring Break Camp— a week-long swim and mentoring program for 24 kids, ages 6 to 12, with priority for low-income families from Franklin and Adelante Elementary, running March 30 to April 3 at the Santa Barbara High School pool. The camp blends outdoor exploration with beginner swim lessons to build water safety and confidence.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sable Offshore remained blocked from restarting production after Judge Geck upheld the injunction on Feb. 27 - the ruling requires the company to secure state permits before restarting. A follow-up hearing is set for June 27 and the Ninth Circuit will review federal jurisdiction in July.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Residents in Santa Barbara may hear sonic booms from three launches staged by Vandenberg Space Force Base (beginning Feb. 28) that include Firefly’s Alpha rocket lifting off today from SLC-2, a pre-dawn SpaceX Falcon 9 launch, and a missile test scheduled for March 3 to 4.  Edhat
  • On Thursday, the Goleta Historic Preservation Commission voted 5—0 to support restoring the historic Barnsdall-Rio Grande Gas Station at 7825 Hollister Ave. into a cafe as part of the Sandpiper Golf Club renovation led by Ty Warner.  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • College sports in Santa Barbara were busy Sunday, with UCSB’s men’s basketball team losing a close game to UC Irvine while the women’s team, led by Zoe Borter, triumphed on Senior Day. UCSB baseball won 7-1 versus Utah ahead of a sweep, and Gauchos softball beat Iowa State 7-5.  KEYT
  • Jackson Flora struck out 10 in seven innings to lead the Gauchos to a win, 7 to 2, over the Utes at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, with Nate Vargas hitting his season's first home run in a decisive inning. Santa Barbara will face Utah again Saturday with Nathan Aceves pitching.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On Saturday, Bishop Diego girls basketball won the CIF-SS Division 5 title with a 42-40 victory over Burroughs after junior Eden Wynne hit a go-ahead floater with six seconds left at Azusa Pacific. The win— their first title since 2015— capped a season of strong defense.  Noozhawk
  • San Marcos girls beach volleyball won 4-1 against Santa Margarita and lost 5-0 to Mira Costa Friday at El Camino College — the Royals with a 10-1 record will face Ventura High on Monday for first place in the Channel League.  Noozhawk
