  • Award-winning neuroscientist Dr. Emily Jacobs will speak at United Way of Santa Barbara County's Women United annual luncheon on April 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Kuehn Court on the Music Academy of the West campus (tickets and sponsorships are now available).  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Paco, a 28-year-old from Goleta, shows his sharp style as armor against hardships — balancing self-medication, lost belongings, and anxiety while waiting at Carillo Street bus stops near Highway 101.   • Local summer camps offer inclusive programs for children with disabilities, sensory sensitivities, or medical needs—featuring trained staff, accessible paths, and flexible schedules that help campers build social skills while enjoying safe, engaging activities.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Bridge Center launches its week-long Bridge Camp for Youth this summer from 5-8 pm, where students 4-12 learn bridge to build math, memory, and teamwork skills while enjoying pizza and a mock tournament with prizes (scholarships and staff background checks ensure safety).  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sable Offshore restarted oil flow through the Santa Ynez Pipeline System from Platform Harmony on March 14 and expects full production later this month, even as state parks denied an easement and ordered removal of a pipeline segment crossing Gaviota State Park (Sable has faced legal and regulatory challenges).  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • The State announced its intent to award $20 million to the county’s Behavioral Wellness Department to support the design and planned construction of two 16-bed residential treatment facilities near North Branch Jail in Santa Maria; the Board of Supervisors will soon review the funding with completion expected by fall 2029.  Edhat
  • Researchers at UCSB have identified how Bordetella bacteria use the FhaB protein to latch onto cilia, a mechanism that may lead to new therapies for whooping cough and kennel cough. The study used advanced imaging techniques (including cryo-electron microscopy) to unravel the bacteria’s binding process.  Edhat

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Royals Ice Hockey team ended their season after losing 1-0 to Edison High in a state championship on Sunday at The Rinks in Anaheim. The Royals built a 21-win streak before Edison scored with 51 seconds left.  Noozhawk
  • San Marcos track & field’s Logan Patterson Deakyne and Dos Pueblos softball’s Anastasia Brunner received Athlete of the Week honors at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe. Deakyne shined at the Spartan Relays while Brunner powered her team with key hits.  Noozhawk
  • At Monday’s SBART luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe, Santa Barbara High’s Dane Polchin earned the Scholar-Athlete Award and San Marcos’ Lily Ruvalcaba received the Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award while local spring sports teams provided early league updates.  Noozhawk
