CULTURE NEWS

  • The Folk Orchestra closed its season with a Celtic tour at local churches while the Choral Society presented an American song narrative at Trinity Lutheran.   • Sushi by Scratch is evolving its menu by increasing local sourcing and traditional preservation techniques (curing, brining, aging) while keeping its intimate 10-seat dining experience.   • State Fest will transform select State Street bars on Saturday, April 4 into a coordinated music and nightlife event featuring local bands and DJs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Botanic Garden opened its new Torrey Pine Conservation Grove on Friday near the Pritzlaff Conservation Center (featuring 45 saplings grown from local seeds) as part of its centennial celebrations.   • Local city officials are reviewing a proposal to rename Calle César Chávez after revelations about the labor leader's past raised community calls to shift the March 31 holiday to honor the broader farmworker movement — discussion is set to begin on April 7.  Santa Barbara Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara family, which battled double cancer, is mourning Cesar Canto who passed away Friday after his cancer returned. Alicia is continuing treatment as she asks the community for help through a GoFundMe campaign to support medical and living expenses.  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Nine Trails Ultramarathon featured a technical 35-mile course with over 10,000 vertical feet of climbs on Saturday morning as 186 runners tackled trails from Jesusita to Romero Canyon and back.   • Jetner Welch’s walk-off hit gave Santa Barbara High a 4-3 win over Rio Mesa on Friday at Eddie Mathews Field. Carpinteria High lost 8-6 to Fillmore after a late rally and will host Del Sol Saturday at John Calderwood Field.  Noozhawk
