  • Pet lovers will join the Mother’s Day Sidewalk Stroll on May 10 from noon to 3 p.m. at Blast 825 Stockyard (Old Town Orcutt) to help raise funds for animal care, with a costume contest and local vendor activities.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara’s historic streets tell a timeline from Indigenous trails to Spanish paths and American planning.   • The Santa Barbara Public Library launched Library on the Go 2.0 during a morning ceremony at Michael Towbes Plaza today to serve residents who cannot easily reach the main library. This new mobile unit expands a longstanding effort to bring books and resources directly into the community.  KEYT
  • UCSB grad student Joseph Farah confirmed that the magnetar model explains the mystery chirps in superluminous supernovae in a feature on Nature, and he will discuss the breakthrough at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History on March 30 at 7 p.m.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chevron will remove its inactive processing facility and deconstruct Tank 861 over the next three years to restore the land for residential use in Carpinteria — a project that includes monitoring air quality, sound, and soil around sensitive areas.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city collected $2.2 million in transient occupancy taxes in February 2026, with hotels generating $21.4 million and short-term rentals $3.0 million; year-to-date revenue is $24.4 million—7.1% above budget and allocated between the General Fund and the Creeks/Clean Water Fund.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara County officials reported that after three years of requiring union companies for large public works projects, only 40% of new hires are local—down from the previous 50-60 percent.
