CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Zoo has earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, confirming its high standards in animal care + well-being and ensuring it remains part of the AZA community for another five years.  Noozhawk
  • This April, Gunpowder Press will publish A Feast for Santa Barbara: Poets Celebrate Food & Drink, an anthology featuring over 100 local poets on food & drink from farms to kitchens as curated by Poet Laureate George Yatchisin. Books are available for preorder online.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History hosted its 26th Annual Mission Creek Gala on March 21, raising a record $741,000 to support its education and science programs.   • Downtown Santa Barbara's State and Carrillo intersection will soon feature vibrant artwork inspired by Mixtec and Zapotec weaving patterns designed by local artists.   • Regional music festivals are upcoming for local fans. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara High School senior Shelby Reyes and Carpinteria High School senior David Esquivel Belmonte received a $50,000 scholarship each on Friday from Edison International as Edison Scholars to support their college dreams in STEM.   • On Friday, about 900 Santa Maria High School freshmen took part in Reality Fair at the Wilson Gym, where they used tablets with Excel spreadsheets to simulate budgeting a fictitious paycheck with guidance from local business professionals.  KEYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County has begun the environmental review for the 4,195-acre Solomon Hills project that could offer up to 4,000 homes + mixed-use community spaces between Orcutt and Los Alamos; residents are invited to submit public comments until April 17.  Edhat
  • City officials are using sheep to clear overgrown vegetation from 16 acres in parks such as Parma, Laurel Canyon, Franceschi and Hale to reduce wildfire risk ahead of high fire season, while electric fences and guard dogs keep the flock safe.  KEYT
