CULTURE NEWS

  • Bold street mural installation — inspired by Zapotec weaving traditions — will start the week of April 13 at the State and Carrillo intersection to boost pedestrian safety and add color near the Farmers Market. City, county, and Bloomberg Philanthropies support the project.  Edhat
  • Local nonprofit NatureTrack will host a free screening of The Invisible Mammal: A Fight Against Extinction at Santa Ynez Valley Grange Hall in Los Olivos on Apr. 17 (doors open at 6 p.m. and filmmaker Kristin Tieche will join a live Q&A).  Noozhawk
  • Isla Vista will host Soltopia — a music festival with 18+ bands and 13 deejay sets — from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 4. The festival offers free food, an art and thrift market, and a beer garden with wristband registration for students and residents.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Santa Barbara Public Library will host La Piazza: A Celebration of Italian Culture from Friday, Apr. 10 through Sunday, Apr. 12 at Michael Towbes Library Plaza. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Renowned author Ibram X. Kendi will speak at UCSB’s Campbell Hall on Tuesday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. about his new book Chain of Ideas that examines the evolution of the great replacement theory (tickets cost $30 for general admission and are free for UCSB students).  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Erika Ruiz Santillán, a third-grade teacher at Adelante Charter School on the Eastside, was named Teacher of the Year by the California Association for Bilingual Education at a San Francisco conference — an honor that recognizes her dedication to bilingual education — and this award highlights her significant impact on local students.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Dos Pueblos High School is raising over $800k to build an official press box at its stadium, replacing a makeshift tarp shelter used in sports and academics. With $200k raised and a $30k district pledge, construction will begin once funding is secured - projected within a year.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara County Water Agency and local providers invite eligible homeowners to apply online for the 2026 WaterWise Garden Recognition Contest, which offers prizes like a Lotusland membership and landscaping tools.   • The Montecito Fire Protection District named Brian Fallon as its new Fire Chief effective April 1 — he brings over 20 years of fire service experience and succeeded longtime Chief David Neels, who retired March 31.  KSBY
  • MTD is proposing a 3% bus service cut starting Aug. 17 to address a $5.8M deficit, with public meetings planned on April 7 (Carpinteria Veterans Memorial), April 14 (Goleta Community Center), April 15 (via Zoom), and April 20 (Central Library Faulkner Gallery).  Edhat

  • A 17-building tech park portfolio sold for $235 million in Goleta. Praelium Commercial Real Estate acquired the mix-used properties spanning 733,497 sqft (including office, industrial, and research facilities) in a deal that highlights Goleta’s growing appeal to institutional investors.  Edhat
