COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Falcon 9 launch, scrubbed on Easter Sunday due to strong winds, will try again today at Vandenberg Space Force Base between 4:03 p.m. and 8:03 p.m. The two-stage booster will send 25 Starlink satellites into space.  Noozhawk
  • A local donor pledged a $1M challenge grant to renovate Elings Park's three fields at Castagnola Complex & upgrades include laser leveling, soil amending, irrigation and warning tracks. The grant unlocks once the park raises $200K by May 1, with work beginning this summer and finishing by October.  Noozhawk
  • Amelia is a two year old mix of Dachshund and Pit Bull Terrier weighing about 43 pounds and available for adoption at the Lompoc Animal Center at 1501 West Central in Lompoc. The center welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday and can be reached at 833 422 8413 for details.  Edhat

  • Santa Barbara County Fire crews quickly contained two vegetation fires on Aliso Canyon Road (first reported at 9:51 p.m. Friday and 2:57 p.m. Saturday) that burned 3 and 8 acres, with cause under investigation.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Out of the Box Theatre Co. is remounting Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins directed by Samantha Eve with a fresh cast that deepens the show’s exploration of contemporary issues. The production will run at Center Stage Theater from April 10 to 19.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Members of the Santa Barbara Treble Clef Chorus will join other California women’s choirs for the California Women’s Chorus Annual Convention and benefit concert (A Trip Across America) set for 2 p.m. on May 3 at California Baptist College in Riverside.  Noozhawk
  • EPIC Impact Society, a local nonprofit, will host its 2026 EPIC International Summit from April 27-29 at Rancho Tajiguas Preserve on the Gaviota Coast.   • Monte Wilson contends that Santa Barbara is not short on revenue but loses downtown customers as restrictive policies and complex regulations make shopping inconvenient, pushing consumers to centers like Goleta (a nearby hub).   • Researchers at UCSB were awarded a Wellcome Leap grant to study how early-life gut microbes may influence neurodevelopment—using high-throughput mini-gut systems at the ExFAB facility to model the effects of environmental exposures on developing microbial communities.
