COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thirty local biking events have received $8,000 in mini-grants from the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments for CycleMAYnia 2026 in May. The grants, chosen from 54 applications, will support diverse activities (treasure hunts, guided rides) throughout the county to boost community cycling.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History invites the community to join its 38th annual Wine Festival on Saturday, June 27 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at its oak woodland campus, where over 75 local wineries, restaurants and culinary artisans are expected as the vendor lineup grows to nearly 90.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Grace Fisher Foundation will host a three-year anniversary celebration of the Inclusive Arts Clubhouse on Sunday, Apr. 12 at La Cumbre Plaza.   • Santa Barbara’s local dining scene features a variety of seafood restaurants — from historic wharf spots to modern coastal settings — that serve fresh local catch. EDUCATION NEWS

  • A free lecture titled AI and Our Shared Future: Opportunities, Challenges and What’s at Stake will be held Thursday, April 23 at 5:30 p.m. (Westmont Downtown's Keith Center) where Mike Ryu and Reed Sheard will explain how AI reshapes society and education.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara Public Library will kick off its inaugural Library Night Live at Michael Towbes Library Plaza (40 E. Anapamu St.) from 6:30-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, featuring guest actor Max Greenfield, book-themed experiences, and culinary bites to support free literacy programs.   • UC Santa Barbara won the 2026 March Yakness tournament this past March, beating Cornell, Brown, Oregon State and Florida State. The win boosted its national profile and led officials to consider new campus safety measures for future tournaments.  Daily Nexus
  • University officials and Associated Students installed mobile security units with cameras, lights, and speakers (authorized under a 90-day permit) to address safety concerns about the lagoon’s dark areas. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Community Environmental Council announced its 2026 Environmental Heroes, Megan Birney Rudert and Assemblymember Gregg Hart, who will be honored for leadership in climate solutions during the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival on April 25 and 26 at Alameda Park, with a ceremony on Sunday, April 26 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council approved Goleta’s Neighborhood Services plan on Tuesday which sets top priorities on renovating the library at 500 N. Fairview Ave. with a $1.7 million capital campaign for a summer 2027 reopening (and updating the homelessness strategic plan by spring 2027).  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Harbor secured $6.15 million in federal funding to dredge sediment-plagued channels and support economic activity. Officials say a funded dredging cycle is scheduled for February to maintain navigability for commerce and recreation — reducing safety risks for boats and harbor tenants.  Edhat
  • On Wednesday, the County Planning Commission approved ordinances to ban new onshore oil and gas wells and launch a three-year study to phase out existing wells (following Board approval in Oct. 2025). The measures will not affect active wells but aim to lower greenhouse gas emissions.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • At Warkentin Stadium on Wednesday, San Marcos triumphed in the All-City tri-meet over Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara in both boys’ and girls’ competitions.
