  • Operation Homefront awarded 17-year-old Natalia Serna, a junior at Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, the 2025 Military Child of the Year award for the Space Force at a gala in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night; she earned $10,000, a laptop and other gifts for her strong school work and volunteer service and will graduate next year with both a high school diploma and an AA degree before planning to attend college and law school.  KSBY

  • Veteran distiller Ian Cutler has opened his new bar and restaurant, Cutler’s Public House, on Salsipuedes Street—customers can enjoy cocktails and pub comfort food as the venue operates daily from 5—10 p.m. with lunch coming soon.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Treble Clef Chorus—originally known as the PTA Mothersingers and serving the community for 60 years—will join voices from across the state at the California Women’s Chorus Annual Convention and Concert scheduled for April 25 to 27 at Hotel Burbank in Burbank. The event will conclude with a benefit concert called Women in Song at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27 featuring performances by chorus members and scholarship winners.  Noozhawk
  • Twelvefold shows a dozen senior art students' works at the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art — located at 955 La Paz Rd — and the exhibition runs through May 3, inviting local viewers to experience a range of creative styles and personal themes.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • PCPA will present the musical “Waitress” to the Central Coast, with shows running at the Marian Theatre in Santa Maria from April 24 through May 11 and at the Solvang Festival Theater from June 19 through July 6. The musical tells a heartwarming story about Jenna — a waitress who dreams of a better life and finds hope in her pies and a budding romance.  Noozhawk
  • The Marjorie Luke Theater in Santa Barbara will launch its 2025 Green Film series tomorrow with the screening of Broke: The Santa Barbara Oil Pipeline Spill of 2015 at 4 p.m. The event will include a discussion panel plus an interactive Q&A with local filmmaker Gail Osherenko and other experts.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Coastal Commission fined Sable Offshore $18 million and issued a cease-and-desist order along with a mandate to restore the damaged coastal habitat—commission staff said the steps came after the company allegedly violated a stop work order. Environmentalists said they expect the Attorney General to act to block the pipeline from restarting.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CalFire released new fire hazard maps late last month that show a 168% increase in high and very high fire risk zones in Santa Barbara, including areas in Mesa, San Roque and La Cumbre—this update will require adjustments to building codes and local safety measures. The Santa Barbara Fire Department will merge these new maps with its Community Wildfire Protection Plan over the next two months to guide future planning.  Edhat
  • Today, mayors Paula Perotte of Goleta, Randy Rowse of Santa Barbara, and Natalia Alarcon of Carpinteria and their city managers meet at 11:00 a.m. at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront to share current financial and development details—organizers say talks will address challenges from uncertain state and federal budgets.  KEYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • On April 5, Planned Parenthood California Central Coast held its annual Birds & Bees Bash at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort, raising about $500,000 to support reproductive health services after losing nearly $400,000 in federal funds. The fundraiser showed the group's effort to keep its six centers open in the tri-county area.  Santa Barbara Independent
