  • Stanley Isaac Clothier, a WWII veteran — whose life went from frontier times to early tech breakthroughs — turned 105 recently. Born in Montana and later building an electronics business, he now lives on the South Coast and stays active by golfing and engaging with his community.  Edhat
  • Camy, a 2-year-old brindle Pit Bull Terrier weighing about 48 lbs, is available for adoption at Lompoc Animal Center in Lompoc, open Tuesday through Sunday. Staff describe her as gentle and car-friendly, and adoption fees include spaying + vaccinations.  Edhat

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A woman was rescued from Buena Vista Trail in Montecito after a rattlesnake bit her ankle on Sunday; despite limited cell service, she texted a loved one for help and was guided by a whistle until firefighters and rescue teams reached her + she was taken to a hospital.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Historical Museum is celebrating a decade of community donations with an exhibit called 'The Gift: New Additions to Our Story' on display through June and featuring artifacts like WWII shrapnel piece + vintage paintings that highlight local history. EDUCATION NEWS

  • UC Santa Barbara physics doctoral candidate Skyler Palatnick has been named to Heising-Simons Foundation’s 51 Pegasi b Fellows and will advance his ultraviolet research at UCLA on a three-year project to develop compact metasurfaces that help NASA detect exoplanet life (a breakthrough in lightweight optics).  Edhat
  • At Campbell Hall, seven UCSB graduate students competed in the 10th annual Grad Slam, each delivering a three-minute talk on innovative research. Kaylee Laub won the competition and will join a statewide event with winners from other UC campuses.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Audubon Society has installed two bilingual signs at Nojoqui Falls County Park to inform visitors about the endangered Purple Martin and its reliance on mature sycamore trees. The project, developed with Santa Barbara County Parks and funded by a local grant, aims to boost awareness of the bird’s behavior (including its migration to South America).  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Public Works Department reopened the closed section of the Maria Ygnacio Bike Path by constructing a temporary bridge over the storm-damaged undercrossing from Calle Real to Lassen Drive. Maintenance staff will begin permanent repairs once the creek is dry — likely late summer.  Edhat
  • The County Planning Commission approved the first phase of a plan to end oil and gas that stops new onshore wells in North County (it may take six months) and sent it to the Board of Supervisors; the later phase will study a ban on active wells.  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • William Joseph Martin (Smokey Joe) made his MLB debut with the New York Giants on April 21, 1936, after shifting from Santa Barbara State during the Depression. He played only eight major league games and later moved to the minor leagues, marking an early milestone in local baseball history.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB Baseball clinched an 11-10 extra inning win over UC San Diego on Saturday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium after Xavier Esquer’s walk-off RBI single sealed the victory. Freshman Josh Jannicelli earned his first collegiate win with three strong relief innings.  KEYT
  • Santa Barbara High School junior Elina Stump set a Dons record with an 18-foot, 11-inch long jump at the Arcadia Invitational (in Arcadia) today. She also finished second in the triple jump and ninth in the 100-hurdles.  KEYT
  • The UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball Team lost its final home match Saturday night 3-0 to No. 3 Long Beach State and celebrated seniors (Joe Wallace, Andreas Schuetz, Ben Pearson, Owen Loncar). They will play their last game at UC San Diego on April 18 at 6 p.m.  Noozhawk
