  • The Historic Landmarks Commission approved revised plans to transform the former Forever 21 at 901 State Street into a music hub that will host instruction, rehearsals, and performances — the project now awaits Planning Commission review for its 3,000 sqft rooftop lounge, with interior demolition scheduled for July.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heal the Ocean and MarBorg Industries announce an expansion of their EPS recycling program today in Santa Barbara and Goleta, as new densifying equipment boosts on-site foam processing which reduces emissions and turns waste into products; the program has kept over 80,000 pounds of EPS from landfills since 2021.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The More Mesa Preservation Coalition is raising funds to save over 200 acres of coastal bluff in Santa Barbara County that is for sale at $65 million and could be developed for housing. The group held a sold-out concert at Lobero Theatre — 650 people attended — to boost support for keeping this open, environmentally sensitive space.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Goleta held a groundbreaking ceremony for the San Jose Creek Multipurpose Path at Armitos Park & Community Garden on April 9. Construction is underway for a three-mile bike and pedestrian pathway connecting neighborhoods, Old Town, the beach, and UCSB, with some traffic delays expected during work.  Edhat
  • Carpinteria’s $90 million wastewater recycling project will break ground in May on a pipeline and July on a 12,000 sqft plant that will supply 25% of the valley’s water by recharging local aquifers. It is funded by state grants + a low-interest loan and is the county’s first such system.  Edhat

  • NBA top prospect AJ Dybantsa led the Soldier Showcase on Sunday, Apr. 12 at UCSB's Thunderdome, where he had his jersey retired (and engaged with young players during a Q&A). The community event featured King of the Court, a three-point shootout, and a dunk contest.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB’s baseball team beat top-ranked UCLA 4 to 0 in Los Angeles, snapping the Bruins’ 27 game win streak (the team now stands at 23 to 11). Strong pitching held UCLA to five hits as the Gauchos gear up for their home game on April 28 at 4:35 p.m.  KEYT
  • Bishop Diego girls beach volleyball duo Sophie Otte and Wynter Thorne-Thomsen won the Tri-Valley League Individual Pairs championship Tuesday — sweeping top seeded teams in straight sets — and now prepare for the CIF-SS playoffs next week.  Noozhawk
  • The SBCC Softball team came from behind to beat Cuesta 9 to 8 at Pershing Park on Tuesday after trailing by eight runs. Key hits by Mia Gaitan, Gracie Verdugo and Sammi Korte powered the comeback, and the team will face Moorpark on Thursday before hosting Cabrillo Saturday at 11 a.m.  Noozhawk
  • The San Marcos girls’ beach volleyball team capped a perfect Channel League season with a 5-0 win over Dos Pueblos on Monday — marking their third straight undefeated run.
