  • United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County announced its annual gala, Great Futures—Under the Tuscan Stars, will take place on Saturday, June 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum to raise funds for youth programs serving over 3,600 local children.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • In Santa Barbara, unhoused people try to find safe places to sleep and face police pushing them away while they worry about cuts to government help—many fear this will make life harder. Some local residents, like a barista who gives free coffee and outreach workers who bring supplies, show small acts of kindness amid these struggles.  Noozhawk

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 17, a 19-year-old Goleta man died in a three-vehicle crash on Modoc Road near Via Senda when his car crossed double solid yellow lines and collided head-on with a 2023 Audi A4 driven by an 87-year-old Goleta woman who was hospitalized with major injuries (incident occurred around 12:34 p.m.).  Santa Barbara Independent
  • A man was trapped in his Honda Accord after a rollover on the 6600 block of Palmer Road Thursday evening and was airlifted at 11:40 p.m. with major injuries after first responders rescued him from the damaged vehicle—he was flown by CalStar helicopter to Marian Regional Medical Center—ensuring urgent care in Santa Barbara County.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History on April 12, the 25th annual Mission Creek Gala: Flora and Fauna raised $665,000—including $300,000 from museum president and CEO Luke J. Swetland’s appeal. The sold-out event had 207 guests enjoy a creekside reception with fun activities and helped fund nature and science classes for schoolchildren.  Noozhawk
  • The Association for Women in Communications, Santa Barbara will honor five women for their creative contributions at the 2025 Women of Achievement Awards luncheon on Wednesday, May 21 at the Cabrillo Pavilion—scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will include performances, art exhibitions, and poetry readings that highlight the work of Adriana Arriaga, Teresa Kuskey, Frances Moore, Melinda Palacio, and Joanne Wasserman.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UC Santa Barbara purchased a 1.2 acre lot at the corner of El Colegio Road and Camino Pescadero in Isla Vista from Friendship Manor to build housing for 15-20 postdoctoral researchers, up to 12 visiting graduate fellows and 10-14 researchers-in-residence for the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. Construction will begin in 2026 with a planned opening mid-2027—Friendship Manor residents may continue to use the lot for parking until work starts.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival returns to Alameda Park from April 26-27 with a green car show, eco-friendly exhibitors, live music and kids’ activities (free admission). The event will also honor environmental pioneer Dr. Leah Stokes during an award ceremony at noon on Saturday (at 1400 Santa Barbara Street).  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Los Padres National Forest officials have released a draft environmental assessment for a wildfire risk reduction project that will treat 90,796 acres to boost forest safety and health. The project plans to use various vegetation methods and host four public meetings—Santa Maria on April 21, virtual on April 22, Big Sur on April 23, and Frazier Park on April 24—before a public comment period opens from May 2 to June 2.  Noozhawk

  • Five local girls beach volleyball teams will begin their CIF-SS playoffs next week as the San Marcos Royals (Div. 1) open at home against Oaks Christian on April 23 at 2 p.m. and Santa Barbara High, Dos Pueblos, Laguna Blanca, and Bishop Diego (Div. 2 and Div. 3) start postseason play on April 22 at 2 p.m.  Noozhawk
