COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday morning, Veggie Rescue staff and Rotary club volunteers harvested 350 pounds of oranges at Rancho Tajiguas on land managed by the Gaviota Coast Conservancy — they then distributed the fruit to nonprofit partners serving families facing food insecurity across Santa Barbara County.  Noozhawk
  • A major donation from Yardi Systems moved the Goleta Valley Library’s campaign closer to its $1,700,000 goal for renovations to the adult area, community room and lobby — donations remain open to raise the final $814,420.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara resident Mads Cantu launched Dog Gym, a mobile program that offers outdoor, small-group coaching sessions to help people + their dogs build trust and proper social skills. Sessions cost between $30 and $150 and meet at designated natural spots.  Noozhawk
  • State of Mind Cafe and Autism Embrace will host a free inclusive community event on April 30 from 5-7 p.m. near Mission Ridge Road and Alvarado Place by the Riviera Theatre; guests will enjoy light snacks, lawn games, music and bubbles while bringing picnic blankets and dinner.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara Public Library celebrates National Library Week today through April 26 with community events including storytime, local business offers, a film screening, and an Open Mic Night Celebration.   • For Autism Acceptance Month, the Koegel Autism Center at UCSB Gevirtz School is donating copies of 'My Brother Otto' to elementary schools in Santa Barbara & Goleta to promote early understanding of neurodiversity.   • UCSB researchers discovered 3,700 new coral-specific bacteria during a Pacific expedition studying reef biodiversity and bioactive molecules; their findings reveal potential for developing new drugs + products and stress the need to protect fragile coral ecosystems.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County and SBCAG are launching a 90-day carpool pilot, Spring into a Carpool, from April 16 to July 14 to reduce traffic and ease commuter stress. The program offers ride matching and events (a model to expand similar initiatives countywide).  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara County Public Works switched on a new traffic signal at the intersection of Hummel Drive and Union Valley Parkway to improve pedestrian safety for local school students. The $1.25 million project funded by Orcutt Transportation Improvement Plan funds is expected to ease delays during peak hours.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • YouthWell, a local mental health nonprofit, launched a free online directory connecting youth, families, and school career centers with over 70 volunteer+internship opportunities across the county.   • Dr. Bonnie Franklin warns local pet owners that batteries pose a serious hazard today. Puppies may chew batteries and cats might swallow button batteries (also called coin cell batteries) that burn tissue quickly, so experts urge storing and disposing of batteries securely to prevent dangerous injuries.  Noozhawk

  • UCSB Gauchos won both softball games against CSUN on Saturday, winning a 4-3 contest in game one and a 9-0 shutout in game two. The team built an early lead and secured their sweep with strong pitching.  KEYT
  • Dos Pueblos High won 3-0 over Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon as a sixth inning rally broke a pitcher's duel. Jameson Barth and Max Cruse combined for a shutout to lift Dos Pueblos to a record of 15-7 while Santa Barbara fell to 9-12 in the Channel League.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara High competed at Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut on Saturday. Elina Stump posted a lifetime best of 14.45 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles & also competed in long jump and triple jump events while Malachi Johnston and the boys 4x800 relay team registered season best marks.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB Gauchos swept a doubleheader against CSUN, winning 4-3 in 12 innings and 9-0 via shutout, bouncing back from last weekend’s loss to Long Beach State. The team will play a single-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the ballpark (Youth Day includes wig giveaways and autographs).  Noozhawk
