CULTURE NEWS

  • DSBIA announced its 24th Annual LIVE Art & Wine Tour, starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30 at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum (136 E. De la Guerra St.) and offering a downtown stroll with art, wines and bites that ends with a final party (7:30-9:30 p.m.) featuring live music.  Noozhawk
  • The Gathering Table offers Asian and French fusion dishes under local chef Budi Kazali at 1555 Mission Drive in Solvang. The restaurant is open for dinner (5 to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, 5 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday) and brunch (8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday to Sunday).  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UCSB professor David Gross received a $3 million Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for his pioneering work in particle physics and string theory. Chancellor Dennis Assanis congratulated him in Isla Vista during the award ceremony.  KEYT
  • National Library Week kicks off next week — local libraries plan to host community events celebrating reading and literacy.  KEYT
  • Octobots Robotics Team placed second at a state competition in Anaheim and will compete at the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston next week. The team is hosting a fundraiser at the old Goleta Pier One (12 Noon to 6 p.m. this weekend) to raise $50K for travel expenses.  Edhat
  • Researchers at UCSB have discovered that inhibitory neurons — usually known for stopping movement — can also drive rhythmic grooming in fruit flies. The findings may help improve robotics design and reveal new insights into how nerves coordinate muscle work.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Heal the Ocean and MarBorg Industries expanded their EPS recycling program by adding densifying equipment that compresses foam for reuse. Community members can drop off clean EPS at MarBorg facilities in downtown Santa Barbara (132 Nopalitos Way) and in Goleta.  Edhat

  • Vandenberg Space Force Base is hosting its third mission update presentation on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Carpinteria Veterans Memorial Building (941 Walnut Ave.) as Col. James T. Horne III and Dr. Kent Gee discuss launch operations and sonic boom effects.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cottage Health hosted a symposium at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara earlier this month where local experts discussed the need for more research on postpartum recovery, chronic inflammation, and autonomic nervous system disorders in women. SPORTS NEWS

  • Santa Barbara High boys lacrosse rolled to a commanding 17-2 win over Thacher in a Channel League game Saturday in Ojai. The Dons (11-2, 6-1) will host crosstown rival San Marcos and may clinch a share of the title if they win.  Noozhawk
  • On Saturday, SBCC Softball split its nonconference doubleheader with Cabrillo by winning game one with a walk-off run and losing game two 12-9 in extra innings. The Vaqueros will host Oxnard on Tuesday at 2 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB men’s soccer defeated Westmont 2–1 in the 60th annual Community Shield match at Harder Stadium on Saturday night; Zac Siebenlist’s early goal and Drew Kamienski’s second-half shot gave the Gauchos the win (the first spring edition of the rivalry).   • UCSB Men’s Volleyball ended their regular season with a 3-2 five-set win over UC San Diego Saturday night to secure the No. 4 seed for the championship and will face the No. 5 seed on Thursday, April 23 at 5:00 p.m. in Irvine at the Bren Events Center.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara High track & field athletes competed at the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut on Saturday. Elina Stump achieved a lifetime best in the 100-meter hurdles and Malachi Johnston placed fourth in shot put; the team gained valuable experience ahead of Saturday's County Championships at Righetti High.  Noozhawk
