- ➤ On May 3 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Home Plate Grill behind the 7-Eleven at 7398 Calle Real will host a Coffee and Community event where residents can meet Mayor Paula Perotte and City Councilmember Jennifer Smith from District 3 and enjoy hot coffee and chilaquiles while discussing neighborhood concerns—Spanish interpretation is offered. - ➤ The Brill Family Foundation has invited artists from Santa Barbara and Ventura Country to submit work for an AI art exhibition titled 'Symbiosis or Schism: The AI Human Odyssey' — a project that explores new technology in art. The show will take place at the Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop from October 2-12 — and selected artists may receive grants up to $5,000, with submissions open until June 13. - ➤ At a candlelight vigil on Monday, about 200 locals gathered at the corner of Haley and De la Vina to honor tattoo artist Danny Meza, who died suddenly in San Diego at age 35 a week ago. His art lives on in murals and tattoos across town—although details about his death remain unknown. Noozhawk
- ➤ Ensemble Theatre Company will bring Hershey Felder to the New Vic in downtown Santa Barbara for a limited run of 'George Gershwin Alone' from May 23 to May 25, where he will perform over two dozen of the famed composer's songs+ the production, directed by Joel Zwick, is expected to sell out after a very strong response to his previous role in 'Rachmaninoff and the Tsar.' - ➤ ShelterBox USA—a Santa Barbara non-profit known for delivering global aid—detailed its efforts to cut single-use plastics and freight emissions in an Earth Day interview with The Morning News, as its president Kerri Murray explained the group's sustainable approach. KEYT
- ➤ More than 200 endangered steelhead trout were rescued from mudslides and relocated in February to Arroyo Hondo Creek at the Arroyo Hondo Preserve, where officials confirmed on April 7 that about 100 new trout hatched. Experts say the healthy spawn signals the population may sustain itself and eventually help repopulate Topanga Creek as it recovers — visitors can tour the preserve for free the first and third weekend of each month. - ➤ Santa Barbara Police Chief Kelly Gordon was in Washington, D.C. this month to join the National PAL Chiefs’ and Sheriffs’ Council as the only California official. - ➤ San Marcos girls lacrosse finished its undefeated Channel League season with an 18 to 8 win over Santa Barbara High on Tuesday at Peabody Stadium as Sadi Adams scored her 100th goal and helped build a 10 to 5 halftime lead before the team outscored the Dons 8 to 3 in the second half. In another game, Cate earned an automatic playoff bid with a 14 to 4 win over Thacher as coach Renee Mack praised the seniors for their leadership. Noozhawk
