  • DSBIA invites residents and visitors to a lively week of downtown events, starting with the Santa Barbara Education Foundation’s 40th Celebration today at the Santa Barbara Club and continuing with art, music, dance, and interactive workshops through Sunday.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Frank Frost, a cherished Santa Barbara community leader who influenced local education, environmental policy, music and underwater archaeology, died on Jan. 9. He played jazz piano in local clubs and led public service efforts that shaped the community's heritage.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The City of Carpinteria will host a Community Work Day at the Tomol Interpretive Play Area on Saturday, May 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers of all ages can join for planting, painting, and beautification to maintain this historic park loved by local families.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Santa Barbara locals have a guide to nine top Mexican restaurants offering dishes from casual beach tacos to upscale mezcal cocktails.   • One805LIVE! is set to host its two-day benefit concert on Sept. 25 and 26 at Kevin Costner’s Summerland estate.   • At Arellanes Elementary in Santa Maria, students planted a young Fern Podocarpus today during the 23rd annual Earth Day tree planting organized by Santa Barbara County Parks and Urban Forestry with support from Supervisor Steve Lavagnino; another tree will be planted Friday for Arbor Day.  KEYT
  • Team Octobots, local high school students, earned second place at the FIRST Robotics Southern California Championship in Anaheim earlier this month. They now seek community help to raise $50,000 for travel & competition at the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston set for April 28-May 2.  KEYT
  • The UCSB Koegel Autism Center is donating copies of the children’s book My Brother Otto to elementary schools in Santa Barbara and Goleta for Autism Acceptance Month. Assistant professor Fernanda Castellon will do readings in K-3 classrooms throughout April (helping students build understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity).  Edhat

  • Husna Balaven, a Dunn School junior, placed in the Top 5 at the CHSSA State Championship held April 17 to 19 (at James Logan High School in Union City). ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Community Environmental Council is hosting the annual Earth Day Festival at Alameda Park on Saturday, Apr. 25 from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 26 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. The event honors Santa Barbara’s legacy of environmental activism stemming from the 1969 oil spill.  Edhat
  • Bill McKibben spoke at Campbell Hall at UCSB on April 21, warning about accelerating climate change and praising the rapid rise of renewable energy. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials are set to review a draft master plan that redesigns about one mile of State Street - alternating pedestrian and vehicle use as part of a long-debated proposal. The meeting is Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers at 735 Anacapa St.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • After Tuesday's rainfall, county health services advised beachgoers to avoid swimming and surfing for at least three days due to storm water runoff (including bacteria and debris). Residents should wait 10 days before harvesting shellfish to reduce health risks.  Noozhawk
