- ➤ Community historian and artist Michael Montenegro will lead the Santa Barbara Cinco de Mayo Mural Bike Ride on May 5 at 5:00 p.m. at Ortega Park—this free event will tour downtown murals and finish with free tacos at Third Window Brewing Company. Santa Barbara Independent

- ➤ Founders Mike Weyandt and Eric Drew turned their home-brew hobby into Casa Agria, a popular business known for sour beers and innovative seltzers. The brewery opened its first taproom in Oxnard in December 2015 and later expanded to a downtown Santa Barbara location in November 2024 — earning awards and strong local support. - ➤ The Goleta Spot signed a lease for the old restaurant site at Santa Barbara Airport and will open a fast-casual space where local food trucks prepare meals for customers inside. - ➤ Doug Margerum, winemaking pioneer and founder of Margerum and Barden Wines, will showcase his small-lot and popular food-friendly wines at the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience from May 12 to 18—he will share stories about the region’s diverse vineyards that inspire his craft. - ➤ Phyllis de Picciotto, who founded the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 1983 and championed local film and art programs, died in 2025 after a long and active career in community service—she is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Santa Barbara City College will build a new $105 million physical education complex on Cliff Drive after its Board of Trustees approved funding with $34 million in state funds and $71 million from the Measure P Bond extension—money that needed to be spent before expiring this summer. Construction may begin next fall and continue until spring as the 1963 facility is replaced by a four-story building that meets Title IX standards and will serve as an emergency relief center. - ➤ Santa Barbara held its 2025 Earth Day Festival at Alameda Park on April 26-27, celebrating 55 years of environmental commitment—attendees enjoyed climate-focused talks, a Green Car Show, locally sourced food, and live music.
