  • Road construction began on April 27 near the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter at 5473 Overpass Road in Goleta and will limit access and street parking on Overpass Road between Tierra Construction and Goleta Valley Self Storage for six weeks, though onsite parking remains open.  Edhat

  • On Saturday, May 2, Deborah Bertling, Anikka Abbott, and Vivian Vega-Rangel of the Three Santa Barbara Sopranos will perform a Broadway brunch show at SOhO (doors open at 11:30 a.m.) featuring classic show tunes and hidden gems; tickets are $25.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Restaurant Week kicks off today and runs through Sunday as local restaurants in Santa Barbara and Montecito offer prix-fixe menus with special dishes at affordable prices.  KEYT
  • Grammy Award winner Christopher Tin will conduct his own works in the season-closing concert on May 31 (3 p.m.) at Trinity Lutheran Church, joined by guest soloists Christina Bristow and Jimmer Bolden while artistic director JoAnne Wasserman conducts Morten Lauridsen’s 'Lux Aeterna.'   • Women’s Economic Ventures was awarded a $10,000 Connect4Impact Grant at the Giving List Women Summit in Montecito on Tuesday, Apr. 28.   • At Monday's SBART Luncheon at Harry's Plaza Cafe, Westmont runner Thomas Reed earned the Scholar-Athlete Award for keeping a 4.0 GPA and earning top honors (he plans to study ophthalmology in college).  Noozhawk
  • Three UCSB professors (oceanographer Alice L. Alldredge, astrophysicist Lars Bildsten and engineer Henry T. Yang) were elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for their distinguished research and teaching. Their induction ceremony will occur in October in Cambridge.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • John Wiley captured a photo of a two-day prescribed burn on Camino Cielo Ridge at 2 p.m. Monday, April 27 near Painted Cave Road and Highway 154 above Santa Barbara. The controlled burn, part of wildfire prevention efforts, will continue until today.  Edhat
  • A House bill to weaken protections under the Endangered Species Act was pulled on April 22, leaving safeguards for endangered species on the Central Coast intact. Local environmental groups welcomed the move + urged continued vigilance as they noted the measure might return later.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new temporary signal light is working on Coast Village Road near Hermosillo exit as part of the Highway 101 improvement project. The light features a blinking red phase and will soon have a pedestrian crosswalk button—helping to ease traffic following recent congestion.  KEYT
  • A phone outage is disrupting service countywide and emergency calls in the northern region are being routed through the Sheriff's Office Communications Center. Non-emergency callers should contact their phone provider or use temporary cell lines at 805-883-8637 and 805-883-8104.  KEYT

  • Cottage Health now lets patients register as organ, eye and tissue donors through MyChart in recognition of National Donate Life Month—streamlining the process with existing information while keeping donor choices private even if patients move.  Noozhawk
