COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Animal Services has launched Cien Colas Felices—an adoption event running from today to May 15 that waives fees at shelters in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc to help find 100 new homes for pets. All adopted animals will be spayed, microchipped and vaccinated, and a license fee may apply while donations are welcomed to support ongoing care.  Santa Barbara Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • UCSB detectives and officials have continued investigating the mysterious death of freshman Liz Hamel, who was found at the San Rafael dorm on Feb. 20 after leaving Lao Wang Noodle Bar on Valentine’s Day, while her father, a private investigator, and an attorney asked locals and students to share any details about a young man seen with her—details that may be key to solving the case— as the investigation remains open.  Noozhawk
  • On April 28 and April 29, UC Santa Barbara Police investigated two hate crime incidents in Isla Vista where suspects on bicycles shouted racist remarks and vulgar insults, with one suspect spitting on victims near the Student Health Service building and another targeting a person near Isla Vista Theatre, and authorities urged anyone with information to contact police.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 60th anniversary of the Santa Barbara Arts — Crafts Fair will be celebrated with a special Mother's Day weekend event on May 10 and May 11 from 10:00 a.m. until dusk along Cabrillo Boulevard—from Stearns Wharf to Cesar Chávez. The fair began in 1965 as a small volunteer event and now features over 100 local artists who create handmade goods in a long-standing tradition of community creativity.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Starting May 7, Santa Barbara Airport will require REAL ID for boarding domestic flights & travelers with alternate documents may face long screening waits. Airport officials say the extra check may take up to an hour, so passengers should plan to arrive much earlier than normal.  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • Santa Barbara High boys lacrosse kicked off the CIF SS Div. 3 playoffs with an 18 to 12 win over Woodbridge on Tuesday at Peabody Stadium & the team avenged last year's first round loss. They will travel to face Martin Luther King High on Friday at 5 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • Erica Downing returns as head coach for San Marcos Girls Indoor Volleyball — she coached the team from 2008 to 2015 — and she replaces Dwayne Hauschild and Tina Brown who led the team to league wins. Downing, a San Marcos alumna who played at UCSB, will build on the team’s 27-6 record from last season.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara City College will induct seven notable athletes—former NBA star Ron Anderson, MLB pitcher Dylan Axelrod, beach volleyball Olympian Dax Holdren, women’s basketball star Carrie LaBudde-Cotter, multi-sport athlete and coach Chuck Melendez, coach Ellen O’Connor and booster Diane Wootton—along with its state championship women’s tennis team from 2001 into the Vaqueros Hall of Fame on May 31. The ceremony will include a noon reception and an event program from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Campus Center on 721 Cliff Drive.  Noozhawk
