- ➤ Santa Barbara residents joined Metro Entertainment this first Saturday in May for the annual nationwide Free Comic Book Day, with about a thousand people gathering to pick up free comics and enjoy new reading material. - ➤ Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society/DAWG will host Paws & Pours: A Night for the Animals at 27 Vines on June 28 to raise funds for animal care, shelter improvements, rescue operations, and day-to-day needs. This event, evolving from last year’s Spayghetti Dinner that raised over $150,000, will feature a multi-course dinner, curated wine, a silent auction, live music, and heartwarming adoption stories. - ➤ Santa Barbara Strings will present its 10th multimedia Story-Telling With Strings Attached project at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at the Music Academy of the West’s Hahn Hall, featuring student compositions, an original narration titled 'The Five Obstacles' and projected student art. The Spring Concert will also include works by Brahms, Handel, Haydn, Grieg and Mozart; tickets cost $20 for adults—children enter free. Noozhawk

- ➤ The Santa Ynez Chumash Museum and Cultural Center will open on May 15 to share interactive exhibits that honor the tribe’s history and culture in a 14,000-square-foot building at 3500 Numancia St.—The museum will operate 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays through Sundays with tickets available online. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Santa Barbara City College approved a $105 million project for a new physical education building on the Cliff Drive East Campus after a 5-1 board vote on April 17, with $71 million from Measure P bonds + $34 million from state funds. The four stories tall, 77187 square feet facility will include an NCAA gymnasium, classrooms, dance and exercise rooms and a fitness center, and construction will begin in fall 2025 and end in spring 2028 after review by the California Coastal Commission from May 7 to May 9. - ➤ Deputy Sheriff Lizbett Hernandez was honored with the Military Order of World Wars—Col. George C. Woolsey Chapter 113 National Law and Order Outstanding Performance Award—recognizing her heroic rescues in 2023 and her swift investigation in 2024, adding to her long service since joining the Sheriff’s Office in 2019 and her role as an Army National Guard sergeant. - ➤ A local resident with a home on West Valerio urged Public Works to leave a large boulder at the southeast corner of Valerio and De la Vina untouched after recent road work—arguing it is a striking new feature in the cityscape.
