  • Shane Brown and his wife Kristine unveiled The Well Gardens (a nine-acre property across from the Polo and Racquet Club) last month in Carpinteria. The venue featured lush greenhouses, antique finds, alpacas and a lantern-lit oak, and it is set to be a community hub for classes, music and creativity.  Noozhawk

CULTURE NEWS

  • SBAcoustic will mark its 10th anniversary with six acoustic concerts featuring performers including John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band, Joe Robinson and others from June 13 to Dec. 6 at Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara Parish Hall (1535 Santa Barbara St.) and SOhO (1221 State St.).  Noozhawk
  • PASF announced winners of its 2026 Music Competition as ten finalists (from over 30 applicants) share part of a $21,000 award to boost musical growth. The first-place winners are pianist Chloe Emma Silva, soprano Nikki Seppala Kurnik, and violist Lydia Plaut.  Noozhawk
  • Ensemble Theatre Company and HFP LIVE present Hershey Felder in his new play The Piano and Me running now through Sunday, May 10 at New Vic Theatre (33 Victoria St.).   • UCSB Arts & Lectures is set to present Philip Glass and The Poets at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 17 at Campbell Hall.   • The Royal Pride Foundation’s annual Royal Ball raised $250K to support programs at San Marcos High School when more than 240 community members gathered at the Santa Barbara Club. The funds will enhance academics, arts, athletics and wellness — investments that benefit the school for years to come.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB’s NSF-funded INSPIRE program has boosted first-year engineering retention by offering seminars, peer groups and mentoring, with early surveys showing no enrollment loss compared to a typical 10-percent drop. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Earth Day, April 22, Blue Whales and Blue Skies launched the 2026 Vessel Speed Reduction Season along the California coast to help protect whales (a program based on Assembly Bill 14 from Assemblymember Gregg Hart) and honored top shipping lines near the Port of Oakland.  Edhat
  • On April 30, Santa Barbara County announced that Southern California Edison awarded a $15.3 million grant to build a solar-powered microgrid in Isla Vista that will support the community center, neighborhood clinic & Sheriff’s Foot Patrol office while serving 170 residential and commercial properties.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • A 92-year-old Santa Barbara County resident urged prominent citizens to renew civic duty in a letter released on Sunday, May 03 at 6:42 p.m. The letter states that experienced local leadership is needed to steer campaigns and unite the district.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • State Street’s weekend night closure is sparking debate as pop up vendors appear between Cota and Ortega after midnight and local hotels report noise complaints while Mayor Randy Rowse questions the plan’s configuration.  KEYT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Santa Barbara surfer Lakey Peterson won the Margaret River Pro in Australia last week by defeating Brazil’s Luana Silva—tying for the season tour lead and marking a major step in her comeback after injuries.
