- ➤ SPARK Rescue Santa Barbara hosted a brunch event called Pride and Paws on Sunday at the Wildcat and the Glitter Brunch where volunteers introduced puppies like 12-week-old Kobe to the community to encourage adoptions. The fundraiser aimed to raise money to buy a rescue facility so more animals can be saved—volunteers explained that without a facility, some animals cannot be rescued. KEYT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The SBIFF Film Center will meet with the Historic Landmarks Commission on May 7 to review its renovation plans before it temporarily closes on May 12. The film center (located at 916 State St) will update its foyer, add a wheelchair ramp for ADA compliance and change its design, with work scheduled to finish by year-end. Noozhawk

- ➤ U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal announced five winners of the 2025 Congressional Women of the Year Award from the Central Coast—Alison Wales from Lompoc, JoAnne Meade Young from Santa Barbara, Lisa Kawamura from Arroyo Grande, Julie Rodewald from Los Osos and Cherie Eulau from Ventura. Their achievements will be recorded in the Congressional Record and they will receive a special congressional pin at a later award ceremony. Noozhawk
- ➤ Santa Barbara will remove the unmarked Highway 101 offramp (exit 95) leading to Los Patos Way and the 1901 Union Pacific Railroad Bridge with its dangerous 12-foot, 3-inch clearance as part of the U.S. 101 HOV project planned for completion by 2030. City officials will redesign the area by building a shoofly to keep trains running and exploring new land uses while the environmental impact report is open for public comment through May 27. - ➤ State investigators reviewed six ICE detention centers under a 2017 law and found serious gaps in mental health care—issues include poor suicide prevention, improper recordkeeping, and excessive use of force at some sites. The report also noted that the number of detained individuals has grown to over 3,100, with about 75% having no criminal history. Santa Barbara Independent

- ➤ Division I soccer players Scott Buie and Hayden Carlson won the men's 3.0 age 5-35 pickleball title on Sunday at the Santa Barbara Municipal Courts by beating twin opponents Hudson and Asher Frei 11-2 and 11-8—Buie and Carlson, who played at Dos Pueblos and UC Davis, plan to enter another tournament soon. - ➤ Kelly and Lisa Strand, who grew up playing volleyball at East Beach, will be honored with a new court called “The Strand Court” at Court No. 3 starting at 10 a.m. May 31—an event organized by the Friends of East Beach Association to recognize their long-time role in the sport. Noozhawk
- ➤ Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara and Laguna Blanca all advanced to the quarterfinals after winning their playoff matches on Saturday—Dos Pueblos beat Fontana, Santa Barbara defeated Foothill, and Laguna Blanca overcame La Cañada. The teams will play new opponents on Wednesday, with Dos Pueblos facing Crean Lutheran, Santa Barbara hosting Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, and Laguna Blanca traveling to Pacifica Christian.
