  • Amtrak Pacific Surfliner started a new morning train route on May 4 that connects Ventura County cities such as Ventura, Oxnard, and Simi Valley to Santa Barbara just before 8 a.m. and offered a complimentary shuttle from Goleta station — a move aimed at easing Highway 101 traffic.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local wineries in Santa Barbara County are offering wines that honor mothers with special labels and family stories, ahead of Mother's Day celebrations later this month.   • The Robotics Club at Santa Maria High School hosted its inaugural Día de los Niños celebration, a free event that brought children and families together with music, games, crafts, and a meal.   • Registration is open for the 2026 Junior Lifeguard Program run by Santa Barbara County Parks with sessions at Goleta Beach County Park and Jalama Beach. Youth ages 6-17 (Minis Program for 6-7) will train in ocean safety and rescue skills from June through August.  Noozhawk

  • UC Santa Barbara marine scientists published research in Nature Scientific Reports linking kelp forests to sandy beach food webs along the coast — a study of 24 beaches over 100 km found that varying kelp deposits boost nutrients and energy flow on the shore.  Edhat
