  • Today, Mothers’ Helpers — a local nonprofit — will host a Mother’s Day Drive at Montecito Fire Department Station 91 to collect essential baby items and raise funds for the Sponsor a Family program. CRIME NEWS

  • Scammers are targeting Santa Barbara residents with fake calls that claim missed jury duty and fines, urging victims to withdraw money for bail while the District Attorney's Office warns residents to hang up immediately and verify the call by contacting a verified Sheriff's Office number—one local woman discovered the scam when the caller mistakenly used her maiden name.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Starting next week, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Film Center will close its current operations to begin a six-month renovation of the former Fiesta Five Theatre at 916 State Street—upgrading the space to be state-of-the-art and fully accessible. The center will host film screenings, educational programs, and special events starting February—making it a key cultural hub for the community.  Edhat
  • The Santa Barbara Symphony will end its season on May 17 and May 18 at The Granada Theatre with renowned violinist Gil Shaham leading two programs.   • The Santa Barbara Culinary Experience will begin next week from May 12 to 18 with over 70 food and wine events across the county—event director Jamie Knee and founder Nancy Martz said the collaboration with the Julia Child Foundation will support local food businesses and offer cooking classes open to all levels.  KEYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Natalie Wilkes, a first-grade teacher at Monte Vista Elementary School, was named the 2026 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year at the May 8 Board of Education meeting—she has 14 years of experience advancing early literacy and inclusive instruction and is now eligible for the California Teacher of the Year award.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Santa Barbara shut down the historic La Casa De La Raza building at 601 E. Montecito Street on Friday due to serious safety issues—such as unsafe wiring, gas piping, poor lighting, and blocked exits—found during a May 7 inspection. Casa De la Raza will relocate its upcoming Mother’s Day Brunch to Café La Fonda as the city works to protect public safety.  KEYT

  • Westmont Baseball defeated Hawai’i Pacific 5-3 on Friday afternoon to capture the PacWest Tournament Championship. Sophomore Joey Rico pitched seven innings—earning five strikeouts while Zach Yates closed the game, and the win secures an automatic berth in the NCAA DII National Tournament with regional play starting May 15.  Noozhawk
