COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Goleta Valley Library on North Fairview Ave. will close for two years for renovations and open a temporary location called GVL Express in June at Hollister Ave.—Staff are keeping the community engaged with outdoor storytime events at Santa Barbara Shores Park and a popular bookvan service that stops by Isla Vista and UC Santa Barbara.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara held its first annual community yard sale on Saturday, drawing over 100 residents who registered via an interactive map to sell items from antique chests to pool tables — sellers noted the event’s lively atmosphere and suggested better advertising for future sales — as a boost to local community spirit.  Noozhawk

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car went off Highway 1 near Lompoc early Saturday after 2:30 a.m. and ignited a brush fire that burned a quarter acre and closed one lane—fire crews put it out by 3:15 a.m. while officers searched the thick brush for victims and the California Highway Patrol began investigating the car’s ownership and cause.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Goleta city officials are discussing funding for Fire Station 10—considering design changes to lower costs as they work with the Santa Barbara County Fire Protection District. City staff recommended moving the project to the long-range capital plan, but council members stressed that it must remain a top priority.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Visiting Nurses Association held its annual Mother’s Day luncheon today to honor two women who made a difference in community health—Rosa Pace, a late founding member of the Santa Ynez Tribal Health Clinic, and Renee Grubb, owner of Village Properties. Grubb said her team helps 30 local charities and supports teachers with funds each year while 100% of the luncheon proceeds support VNA Healthy’s community care programs.  KEYT

SPORTS NEWS

  • UCSB Softball beat CSU Northridge in two games to win its first Big West Championship and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The team tied its overall win record at 34—setting a season record for most runs scored while winning six elimination games.  Noozhawk
  • San Marcos girls swim finished fourth at the CIF-SS Div. 1 Championship meet on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College — four swimmers, including senior Sierra Tallman who set a new league record in the 200 IM and earned All-American honors, posted personal best times in high heat. The team will compete at the CIF State Championships in Fresno next weekend.  Noozhawk
  • Dos Pueblos boys lacrosse defeated Oaks Christian 13-4 on Saturday at Scott O’Leary Stadium with a strong defense led by goalie Danny Perez — eight different players contributed to the win that sends the team to the CIF-SS D2 Finals, where they will face the winner of the Aliso Niguel and San Clemente game next Saturday at Fred Kelly Stadium.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara High boys volleyball swept Santiago High in Corona on Saturday—winning 25-21, 25-16, and 30-28—and will face Sage Hill next weekend in the CIF-SS Division 4 championship match as details will be announced Monday.  Noozhawk
