COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Animal Services is hosting the national Empty the Shelters campaign event One Hundred Happy Tails to help 100 pets find forever homes. Adoption fees will be waived at its Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Lompoc shelters through May 15 plus adopted animals will be spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.  Noozhawk
  • Last year, a shelf fell in People Helping People’s new Solvang space because of hidden water damage that led to mold, and the organization closed the rooms until repairs could begin + the Gainey Foundation gave $50,000 to start the work, marking their third consecutive gift to support essential services for low- and moderate-income residents.  Noozhawk

  • Women entrepreneurs and business leaders are preparing for the 16th Annual Women’s Success Summit—Unlock Your Profit Power from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 20 at Rincon Beach Club in Carpinteria, hosted by eWomenNetwork. Keynote speaker Sandra Yancey will deliver profit-driven strategies aimed at boosting revenue and ensuring sustainable business growth.  Noozhawk

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 9, The Brilliance Program celebrated its 30th anniversary with performances of George Balanchine’s 'Who Cares?' and Gerald Arpino’s 'Birthday Variations' along with a world premiere by choreographer Kassandra Taylor Newberry—an event supported by music from George Gershwin and Giuseppe Verdi, the Opera Santa Barbara Orchestra, and conductor Kostis Protopapas. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Education Foundation raised a record $278,000 at its recent Hope Awards event to honor creativity and support public schools — over $100,000 of the funds will go to teacher and student grants for creative, project-based learning.  Noozhawk
  • Twelve cadets graduated from Allan Hancock College’s CORE Custody Academy after completing a six-week training course with 260 hours of instruction at the Public Safety Training Complex in Lompoc (they will begin serving as custody deputies for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office).  Noozhawk
  • Natalie Wilkes, a first-grade teacher at Monte Vista Elementary, was named Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year on May 8 for her work in early literacy and helping students overcome reading struggles. She will be honored on May 22 and in October—her achievement also makes her eligible for the California Teacher of the Year award.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, May 13, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will review proposals in Santa Maria to phase out onshore oil production, a move aimed at protecting local air, water and health. Officials say ending oil extraction will help reduce long-term cleanup costs — a plan that could transform the county’s future energy and economic outlook.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Community Environmental Council invites Santa Barbara residents to free climate action events at its Environmental Hub—1219 State St. The schedule includes a Sierra Club gathering on May 13th from noon—1:30 p.m., a film screening on May 15th from 6:30—8 p.m., an EV assistance program on May 21st from 2—5 p.m., and an environmental justice discussion on May 29th from 6:30—8 p.m.  Noozhawk
