- ➤ SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Monday evening to send 26 Starlink satellites into orbit. The rocket rattled windows along the coast and its booster landed for the sixth time on a droneship in the Pacific Ocean—SpaceX confirmed the satellites deployed as planned—while future missions are planned. - ➤ After years of low recruitment and high staff vacancies, the Santa Barbara Police Department hired 20 new officers last year—cutting its vacancy rate from 25% to 10% and reaching its highest staffing levels in over a decade. - ➤ Sansum Diabetes Research Institute will host two educational programs on Type 1 diabetes—one on May 20 from 5-6 p.m. featuring community outreach manager Lauren Decker and another on June 10 from 5-6 p.m. led by medical science liaison Tadeh Vartanian covering autoimmunity, early detection, screening, and management options for adults aged 18 and older, and both sessions are sponsored by Sanofi. - ➤ Laguna Blanca swim’s Bennett Sullivan was named SBART Athlete of the Week after he scored 121 of his team’s 170.5 points at the CIF-SS Division 3 Championship meet — Dos Pueblos lacrosse’s Linnea Clapinski earned the honor by scoring a game-winning overtime goal and five goals during her postseason play. - ➤ On Sunday, UCSB Baseball defeated Loyola Marymount 17—5 in a seven-inning game as LeTrey McCollum set a record with his 46th consecutive on-base appearance. The team scored in every inning and saw career-high RBIs from Nate Vargas and Rowan Kelly. Noozhawk
- ➤ Three local high school baseball teams — Santa Barbara High, Dos Pueblos, and Cate — begin their CIF-SS postseason runs this week after strong regular seasons.
