COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday evening, county firefighters rescued a horse that fell into a ditch at the 1700 block of San Marcos Pass Road and risked slipping into a creek; its veterinarian sedated the animal (allowing firefighters to safely lift it onto stable ground), and the horse was not injured.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 150 artists turned the plaza outside Old Mission Santa Barbara into an open-air art gallery using chalk pastels at the 40th annual I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival this Memorial Day weekend — supporting The Children's Creative Project for local school arts programs.  KEYT
  • Metropolitan Theatres will present Metro Summer Kids Movies from June 17 through August 12 at Camino Real Cinemas in Goleta, with weekly screenings every Wednesday at 10am ($2 per ticket with no booking fee). Families can look forward to enjoying films like The Secret Life of Pets and Shrek 2 in a fun, affordable setting.  Edhat
  • The historic tall ship Mystic Whaler docks at Ventura Harbor through May 31, offering free deck tours and children’s activities such as Plankton Pals on May 30. The ship will visit Santa Barbara Harbor on June 7 as it continues its coastal educational journey.  Edhat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Public Library will run its Summer Reading Program from June 6 to Aug. 7. The program is open to children, teens and adults with free events, reading challenges and kickoffs at Fox Wine Co. on June 4 (120 Santa Barbara St.) and the Central Library on June 6.  Noozhawk
  • UC Santa Barbara launched the Art of Wellness program to help students manage stress with guided meditation, creative exercises, and free lunch from South Coast Deli. The workshops run every other Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Mosher Alumni House Room 2104 and are open to all students.  Edhat
  • United Way of Santa Barbara County finished a $2M project that created 272 licensed childcare spaces, provided over $100K in family scholarships, and launched new training and emergency plans for local providers. The organization will continue its work by offering childcare scholarships and facility grants with applications due May 29.  Edhat
  • Munira Kairat, a PhD candidate at UCSB Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, has been named a 2026 National Academy of Education Spencer Dissertation Fellow. She is one of 35 scholars (selected from nearly 500 applicants) to advance her research on multilingual heritage language learning.  Noozhawk
  • MOXI held its annual Power of MOXI Brunch on April 28, raising $55,000 for educational programs like afterschool initiatives and free field trips. Over 140 attendees including local public officials gathered on the museum’s second floor in the Funk Zone to support hands-on learning.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Victor and Susan Schaff Family Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Santa Barbara Botanic Garden to support its Native Plant Landscaper Certification Program, training local professionals in ecological landscaping and sustainable garden management. The hybrid course offers online lessons and field sessions to boost native plant conservation.  Edhat
  • Vandenberg Space Force Base Fire Department will hold controlled burns near Watt Road and 13th Street on North VSFB from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on permissive burn days from June 1-30 to train firefighters (each burn covers 5-10 acres, up to 30 acres total).   • UCSB Baseball prepares for the NCAA postseason in the Austin Regional starting Friday at 3 p.m. PST at the University of Texas—earning an at-large bid after a 38-18 season and a Big West regular season championship, the Gauchos will first face Tarleton State.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara City College alum Vicente Rodriguez captured the golf title on Monday at Santa Barbara Golf Club. He overcame a deficit of two strokes to finish 10 under par after 54 holes, with Leo Metzger and defending champion Hudson Vedder among the top finishers.  Noozhawk
