CULTURE NEWS

  • Happy/Sad Theatre Company will present A Delicate Ship at Center Stage from June 12 to 14, a play that explores a young couple’s struggle with loss and the resurfacing of childhood memories + it marks the company’s second show at the intimate venue.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Retired art teacher Kevin Gleason is hiking the 2,652-mile Pacific Crest Trail and painting a new landscape daily with gouache (opaque watercolor) in his sketchbook.   • The Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away runs from June 11 to July 27 at the Solvang Festival Theater (420 2nd St., Solvang) and tells the story of Newfoundland’s warm welcome to nearly 7,000 stranded passengers during a time of crisis.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The documentary Spacewoman about pioneering astronaut Eileen Collins opened in theaters Friday in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles (highlighting her journey from a working-class background to commanding a space shuttle). It will be available on digital platforms starting June 2.  KEYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dos Pueblos High School students have been serving over 7,400 salads through their Healthy Salad Meals program since January 2025, using hydroponic towers (vertical garden structures) that save water and reduce waste, while local partners like Ca’Dario and the Believe Big Charitable Foundation support the effort.  Noozhawk
  • Library Night Live raised over $160,000 last Thursday at Michael Towbes Library Plaza to benefit local literacy programs. More than 200 guests enjoyed live music, storytelling and a keynote by award-winning author Matt de la Peña.  Edhat

  • City staff are presenting a draft plan to redevelop Paseo Nuevo as a mixed-use hub through adaptive reuse of the former Nordstrom and Macy's buildings.   • Organic Soup Kitchen has provided medically tailored meals for seniors, cancer patients and low-income residents facing food insecurity amid rising costs.   • Santa Barbara City College baseball players earned All-State and All-Region honors announced Thursday by the CCCBCA. Wylan Nelson, William Matuszak, and Max Collins were recognized for their standout performances, highlighting a season of achievement.  Noozhawk
  • Local Channel League tennis teams were honored after a successful 2026 spring season with Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara High, and San Marcos recognizing standout student-athletes.
