The Santa Barbara Zoo welcomed Ruby the red panda—arrived from Seneca Park Zoo in New York this month—and Tamur, a 5-year-old Amur leopard now seen in both public and private areas of his exhibit.
UCSB’s Media Arts and Technology program will present its end-of-year show 'Deep Cuts' with public events on June 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the California NanoSystems Institute on campus and on June 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Center for Art, Science and Technology downtown+ the show features art, science and technology projects by graduate students.
The Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries will launch the LEVEL UP at Your Library Summer Reading Program on June 14 with a Kick-Off Event at Stow House from 10:00 a.m. — 2:00 p.m. that will offer registration, Beanstack sign-ups, live entertainment, lawn games and food trucks and the program will run until July 27 — changes caused by the temporary closure of the Fairview location for Goleta Valley Library.
Girls Inc. of Carpinteria announced on May 29 that its ninth Eureka! program cohort has graduated high school and will begin college this fall—several graduates received over $10,000 in scholarships to support their plans.
The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara honored local students at awards ceremonies this week — over 650 people attended the South County event at the Courthouse Sunken Garden on May 28 and more than 750 attended the North County event at Santa Maria Fairpark Convention Center on May 29. The ceremonies celebrated both new and returning scholarship recipients.
The City of Santa Barbara finished building a roundabout at East Cabrillo Boulevard and Los Patos Way on May 29 after a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 28 with help from the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments.
The new roundabout improves safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists—making it easier to reach the Waterfront and nearby areas.
On May 30, seven leaders broke ground on a new three-story clinic at the corner of Micheltorena and San Andres—this facility will deliver expanded medical, dental and mental health care to serve local residents.
The project is part of a $23 million fundraising campaign covering construction, a new data sharing platform and operating support for three years.
Dos Pueblos boys lacrosse finished an undefeated regular season and advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2 Finals while earning all six individual awards from Channel League play—seniors Jack and Dan Finneran led scoring and set records during their standout season.
Other local teams including Santa Barbara High, Cate, and San Marcos also received multiple All-Channel League honors.
