ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Authorities are investigating a vegetation fire that broke out beside Highway 101 near Nojoqui early Saturday morning — firefighters responded around 12:19 a.m. and contained the blaze before it spread beyond 1/2 an acre. KSBY

- ➤ Today, Jette Asher shared her Photo of the Day showing a sunset view from Cliff Drive in Santa Barbara—capturing the local scenery in its natural light. Noozhawk
- ➤ UC Santa Barbara’s Media Arts and Technology program will hold its annual Deep Cuts show with public events on June 3 and June 5—featuring research demonstrations, media installations and immersive experiences. The first event is at the California NanoSystems Institute in Elings Hall and the second is at the Santa Barbara Center for Art, Science and Technology during the city’s First Thursday art walk. - ➤ The Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries are launching LEVEL UP at Your Library for a summer reading program starting Saturday, June 14 until July 27—participants can sign up at a kickoff event at Stow House and earn prizes by logging their reading on Beanstack at several local sites. - ➤ The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara honored area students at two awards ceremonies on May 28 at the Courthouse Sunken Garden and May 29 at the Santa Maria Fairpark Convention Center—over 1,400 people attended the events. The foundation will award college and vocational scholarships worth more than $7.7 million to 2,125 students this year. Noozhawk

- ➤ On May 29, volunteers and representatives from Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, Island Packers, Santa Barbara Adventure Company, and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation removed 1,400 pounds of trash and lost fishing gear from Yellowbanks on Santa Cruz Island and Driftwood Cove on Anacapa Island—using kayaks and a skiff to ferry the debris to the mainland for proper disposal. - ➤ On Saturday in May, a Falcon 9 rocket launched at 1:10 p.m. from Vandenberg Space Force Base and deployed 27 Starlink satellites into orbit (its first-stage booster made its 25th landing on a droneship in the Pacific). Officials said the base may host up to 70 launches in 2025 as plans for a new facility advance (environmental review meetings are set for June in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Lompoc). Noozhawk
- ➤ The Vandenberg Space Force Base Fire Department will conduct controlled training burns in June near Watt Road and 13th Street on North VSFB to train new firefighters and dozer operators. The burns will take place June 12–13 and June 16–27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on burn days and may produce smoke that calls for precautions for children and older adults. Noozhawk

- ➤ A proposal in Congress would require certain adults to work, attend school or volunteer for 80 hours each month to keep their Medi-Cal benefits—analysts warn that if it is implemented more than one million Californians could lose their coverage.
