COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dr. Ephraim Sneh, who served as chief medical officer during the 1970 Entebbe rescue, will discuss his role and insights on leadership in Israel. The talk will take place Tuesday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Adam Bronfman JCC (524 Chapala St.) in Santa Barbara with free admission, RSVP required.  Noozhawk
  • Angels Foster Care held its 13th annual Al Fresco Luncheon on April 30 at Glen Annie Golf Club, raising over $135,000 to support local foster infants, toddlers, and kinship families as it celebrated 20 years of community impact.  Noozhawk
  • Los Padres Scout Council will honor longtime leader Bill Macfadyen & the Borgatello Family at the Santa Barbara Club on Thursday, Oct. 29 with awards for community service and professional achievement. Funds raised support Scouting programs for over 3,000 youth.  Noozhawk

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Horticultural Society presents a tour of the David Heinz Garden of Bromeliads at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at 918 Mission Ridge Road; memberships can be purchased on-site by cash or check. Parking is limited to Heinz’s driveway and nearby spots + visitors should allow extra time.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A $25,000 grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation funded Explore Ecology’s School Garden Outdoor Classrooms that provided hands-on environmental lessons to over 11,000 elementary and junior high students in 38 gardens countywide during the 2025-26 school year & taught them about plants, pollinators and sustainable agriculture.  Noozhawk
  • Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries launch the Read-A-Palooza Summer Reading Program today through July 31 and host a free kick-off event on Saturday, June 6 at 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. behind the Goleta Community Center—families can log reading to earn prizes and join engaging activities.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Community Environmental Council will host Climate Fridays Santa Barbara to present updates on the city’s Waterfront Adaptation Plan and discuss U.S. climate treaty efforts. The event will be held on Friday, June 5 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the CEC Environmental Hub, 1219 State St.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Philanthropist Betty Elings Wells donated $1 million to fund the Elings Wells Family Wellness Center at San Marcos High School to support mental and emotional health for students and families. Construction will begin in June, partnering with local groups to create a dedicated hub for wellness.  Edhat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Santa Barbara High senior Malachi Johnston finished eighth at the CIF Track & Field State Finals in Clovis Saturday by throwing 57-0.75 in the shot put, concluding his multi-sport high school career (he was ranked 35th in the state at season start).  Noozhawk
  • Los Angeles Rams Pro Bowl stars Puka Nacua + Kyren Williams hosted a four-hour youth football camp at Santa Barbara High School where over 500 kids practiced drills and took photos with the stars; they later headed to Bakersfield on Saturday for a second four-hour camp.  KEYT
  • UCSB Baseball defeated Tarleton State 9-5 last Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field to advance to the Austin Regional Final. The Gauchos will face regional host Texas on Sunday (3 p.m. PST) and must win on both Sunday and Monday to advance to the Super Regional.  Noozhawk
  • UC Santa Barbara baseball lost 6-4 to Texas in the Austin Regional final on Sunday afternoon. Dos Pueblos High alum Kellan Montgomery delivered a strong start (retiring hitters in order through five innings) but Texas scored four runs in the final three innings to secure the win.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara High shot putter Malachi Johnston finished eighth at the CIF State Championship Meet in Clovis on Saturday with a throw of 57' 0.75" (one of his best marks as he prepares to join Cal Poly for football). He set a personal record of 57' 5" a week earlier.  Santa Barbara Independent
