COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Women’s Economic Ventures hosted its Community Impact Event on May 22 at The HUB in downtown Santa Barbara to celebrate 2024 achievements and launch its Impact Report. The event featured remarks from Associate Director Irene Kelly—who stressed the need for economic equity—and Bank of America’s Brenda Cervantes, reinforcing local support for women entrepreneurs.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Habitat Santa Barbara celebrated 25 years at the sold-out Denim and Diamonds gala on May 2 at the Carriage and Western Art Museum, raising over $258,000 for local affordable housing and receiving more than $177,000 in new pledges. The event highlighted the nonprofit’s work in building 22 homes and repairing over 220 houses as Habitat homeowners shared how affordable homeownership changed their lives.  Noozhawk

CULTURE NEWS

  • Juneteenth Santa Barbara will hold its eighth annual free celebration on June 14 at Plaza Del Mar/Band Shell Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature local live performances, a Black Artisan Market, a kids zone with face painting and for the first time a beer — wine garden for guests 21 and older.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara’s Pets and Animals issue shows a 1924 Pablo Neruda poem that honors cats and shares local pet stories—like Fido Photo Contest winners, a change at the local pound, and a master dog-finder tracking lost pets.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Earl Warren Showgrounds will host Santa Barbara Rodeo Days Aug. 1-3 where rodeo performers will showcase events like bull riding, barrel racing and mutton busting while a Fiesta-themed carnival offers free rides, food and entertainment — the event celebrates our community's Western heritage.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Music Academy of the West purchased the long-vacant Forever 21 building at 901 State Street for ($10 million) and plans to turn it into a downtown extension for classical music classes and rehearsals. The academy will begin interior and acoustic renovations after a permitting process expected to take about a year (including work to upgrade the 6,000-square-foot basement), with completion scheduled for 2028.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials said high fire season began on June 2 (at a cloudy press conference) and urged residents to clear gutters, remove flammable vegetation, and prepare a go bag (with essential supplies) in case of an evacuation. Residents were reminded to sign up for emergency alerts and heed red flag warnings to stay safe.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the new State Street undercrossing opens in Santa Barbara after more than 18 months of work. City leaders, bike riders and business owners worked together—adding wider sidewalks, safer bike lanes and reconfigured intersections to slow cars and help pedestrians.  KEYT
  • The county Board of Supervisors cut $1.4 million from its cannabis budget and shifted funds from the Sheriff’s Office to health, education and youth programs, reducing the enforcement team’s staffing and overtime costs. The board also lowered allowed cultivation acreage — reduced from 186 and 1575 to 140 and 1411 acres respectively — and raised growers’ licensing fees.  Edhat

  • New restaurant openings are booming across the South Coast, with Carpinteria’s new food hall drawing long lines while owners wonder if local and seasonal diners can fill all the new seats — a concern echoed in Santa Barbara and Montecito.
