- ➤ Community members and officials celebrated the start of major renovations at Dwight Murphy Field on Thursday. The nearly decade-long project will add an accessible playground, a larger fitness area, a sports field with artificial turf, new restrooms and more parking—aiming to modernize one of Santa Barbara’s oldest parks over the next two years. - ➤ Santa Barbara will hold two community meetings on the Westside and Lower West Transportation Plan—the virtual meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the in-person meeting is set for Wednesday, June 18 at La Cumbre Junior High School; residents can view updated plans, ask questions, and learn that construction is expected to begin in 2027. - ➤ The city of Santa Barbara completed the Vision Zero State Street Undercrossing Project that widened sidewalks and improved bike lanes on State Street (a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 4 after construction finished in early May), adding decorative columns, upgraded lighting and safe crossings to better connect Downtown and the Waterfront. - ➤ On June 5, county planners presented workforce housing plans that could add up to 160 affordable units downtown—one site may bring 60 units and the other about 100, with an RFP planned in six months to guide developer selection. Santa Barbara Independent
- ➤ In Santa Barbara, the County Surveyor’s Office changed how it works by using an online system built by Visus that lets surveyors and property owners upload files, get digital feedback, and submit payments. Microsoft recently featured Visus for the digital upgrade that saved the county $30,000 in rent each year and reduced project times—helping save up to 200 staff hours annually. - ➤ Santa Barbara Police Department offers a free Narcan Distribution Program in its lobby at 215 E. Figueroa St. starting June 5, with service available Monday from noon to 5 p.m. and Tuesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—this initiative by the California Department of Health Care Services is part of a statewide effort to reduce opioid-related deaths. - ➤ Since June 5, the Santa Barbara Police Department has offered a free Narcan Distribution Program in its lobby at 215 E. Figueroa St where anyone who watches a brief educational video receives two 4mg doses of Narcan nasal spray with no registration needed. The program is sponsored by the California Department of Health Care Services and is available Monday 12 pm-5 pm and Tuesday-Friday 8 am-5 pm; questions can be directed to 805-897-2355.
