COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Milo is a 2-year-old Alaskan Husky weighing about 48 pounds and is available for adoption at the Lompoc Animal Center in Santa Barbara County. He is gentle, needs a calm and patient home, and his adoption fees include neuter, microchipping, vaccinations, flea treatment — and a health exam.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chaucer’s Books will host an evening of poetry readings at 6 p.m.—Tuesday, June 24 at 3321 State St. The event will feature selections from the new book Women in a Golden State: California Poets at 60 and Beyond and is co-hosted by editors Chryss Yost and Diana Raab.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara Zoo welcomed Ruby, a young red panda from Seneca Park Zoo, as part of the Species Survival Plan. Animal care staff will work over the next few months to introduce her to Raj—the zoo’s male red panda—to help support the endangered species.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UC Santa Barbara will honor over 7,400 students with nine commencement events over eight days—one ceremony took place on June 8 while upcoming ceremonies are scheduled for June 12, 13, 14, and 15 on campus venues.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Unified has released its 2025-26 proposed budget and the document is available for review at the district office at 720 Santa Barbara St.—community members can give feedback at a public hearing on June 10 with a board vote on June 24.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Maria Joint Union High School District recognized 137 English learners at reclassification celebrations held at Righetti, Pioneer Valley, Delta and Santa Maria high schools—students received dinner, certificates and medals—and honored their progress toward mainstream classrooms.  Noozhawk
