COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Father Virgil Cordano Center has launched a capital campaign to raise $10 million for a new navigation center after its small rented facility at 4020 Calle Real proved too limited for growing demand. A vacant parcel at 4085 State Street has been purchased — the facility will offer shelter, meals, case management, counseling, and community engagement — to better serve people experiencing homelessness.  KEYT

  • Santa Barbara brothers Joe and Pete started New Tricks Dog Food after cooking healthier meals for their dogs—now their small-batch, gently cooked recipes are carefully prepared in a certified kitchen. They deliver locally and to nearby areas, and they plan to expand retail partnerships with local pet shops while keeping a strong community focus.  Edhat

  • Country music star Trisha Yearwood will headline One805LIVE!—a fundraiser supporting local first responders—at Kevin Costner’s oceanfront estate in Summerland on September 20 from 4 PM to 10 PM, with all proceeds directed toward vital equipment and mental health resources for Santa Barbara County’s First Responders.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rotary Club of Montecito awarded scholarships to 11 SBCC students who are studying vocational careers in fields such as nursing & journalism; club officials & faculty attended the ceremony to mark nearly 25 years of supporting local technical education.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Unified has opened its proposed 2025-2026 school budget for review at 720 Santa Barbara Street—covering operations, programs and services for the upcoming school year—and invites community feedback at a public hearing scheduled for 7 p.m. today, with the budget adoption meeting set for June 24.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara City Council will start its $577 million budget talks at 2 p.m. today at City Hall—community groups are urging the council to boost the Housing Trust Fund to $5 million while the budget currently sets aside $1.5 million for each of fiscal years 2026 and 2027. The council will also review fee increases and reserve funds adjustments for parks, the waterfront and public safety ahead of a final vote on June 17.  Noozhawk
  • Construction of the new bridge at 2700 De La Vina Street will begin mid-June and finish in summer 2027 to replace the old bridge over Mission Creek—detours will maintain one-way southbound traffic on De La Vina Street during the project.  Santa Barbara Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • A volunteer played guitar and led a singalong at Friendship House that lifted the spirits of residents with dementia—sparking memories and easing stress as many tapped their toes and smiled during the performance.  Noozhawk

  • On Monday, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table celebrated local student athletes, coaches and teams at Marjorie Luke Theater—Greg Zuffelato of Santa Barbara High was named High School Coach of the Year and UCSB Softball coach Jo Evans was named College Coach of the Year while other awards were also given.  Noozhawk
  • The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table held its annual banquet to honor standout student-athletes and posthumously induct Jim Glines and Rodney Smalley into its Hall of Fame. Malia Ortiz was named Female Athlete of the Year while Jude Anderson and Tounde Yessoufou shared Male Athlete of the Year, with honors also given to Halee Sager, Adler Von Protz, Joselyn Herrera-Velquez, and Mila Dolores.  Noozhawk
