COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Immigrant rights groups and activists gathered outside the Santa Barbara County Courthouse on Tuesday to protest ICE raids that have already led to 81 detentions since January—organizers urged local officials to strengthen protections as reports showed dozens of farmworkers were picked up in nearby cities. Nearly 300 people joined the rally to warn that similar actions could soon impact the community.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara’s Bloomsday celebration returns on Monday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m. at The James Joyce pub — local actors and writers will read excerpts from Ulysses while donations support the Public Library Foundation.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Theatre Group at SBCC will open its 80th season with Mel Brooks' musical comedy 'Young Frankenstein' playing from July 9 to 26 at the Garvin Theatre (on West Campus, 900 block of Cliff Drive). Directed by Rick Mokler, the show will feature previews at 7:30 p.m. on July 9-10 and regular performances Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. plus a matinee on Sunday (2 p.m.).  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara Department of Parks and Recreation announced that Concerts in the Park will return at Chase Palm Park every Thursday in July, offering free, family-friendly music at Great Meadow (236 East Cabrillo Boulevard) (6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) in partnership with the PARC Foundation.   • Norm Yost — founder and winemaker at Flying Goat Cellars — is named 2025 Vintner of the Year by the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Alliance for his 25 years of award-winning winemaking; he will be honored at the Wine & Fire La Paulée Dinner on August 15 and host a 25th Anniversary Party on June 21 at his winery, marking key milestones in his 45-year journey.  Edhat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eighty-six undergraduates from UCSB's College of Creative Studies celebrated their commencement on Sunday, June 8 as they closed four years of creative work. Chancellor Henry T. Yang and Dean Tim Sherwood praised the graduates—citing their achievements in art, science, and research—as they prepare for their next steps.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the City Council set aside $5 million from its $577 million budget for affordable housing for 2026 and 2027 by reallocating reserve funds and trust funds. Community groups urged this move amid rising rents — the vote was 6-1 for 2026 and 4-3 for 2027.  Noozhawk
  • State utility regulators will finalize plans on how PG&E spends a fee to support the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant, which will continue operating until 2030 to help keep energy secure. Critics worry the fee might serve as a slush fund while PG&E says it is meant to cover operating losses + support projects such as grid safety and renewable energy.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • First 5 Santa Barbara County works to strengthen home visiting services that support healthy pregnancies and improve parenting skills in our community.
