COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community leaders, advocates, and residents gathered outside the Santa Barbara Courthouse on June 10 to protest federal immigration raids that have created fear among immigrant families—local agencies confirmed ICE operations will continue through June 15.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara is marking the 100-year anniversary of the June 29 earthquake with nearly 30 planned events+ including a block party on State Street, a remembrance ceremony at the Mission, and an earthquake symposium at Lobero Theatre. Engineering geologist Larry Gurrola reviewed old newspaper reports+ and found new details like a ground roll and tsunami-like waves that shaped how the city was rebuilt.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Santa Barbara City Council approved its two-year budget plan that adds an extra $2 million a year for affordable housing without making major cuts—using a one-time draw from the reserve fund to meet a $5 million housing goal.   • Santa Barbara County officials said they will revise the way they measure success in addressing homelessness because new help requests are outpacing those who transition into housing.   • On Tuesday, ICE agents raided Laguna Farms near CSU Channel Islands in Camarillo and similar enforcement actions unfolded across Ventura County, sparking peaceful protests outside Oxnard City Hall that lasted late into the night—residents expressed concern over the effects on local business and community safety. Local organizers announced that residents will join a nationwide day of action Saturday at Chase Palm Park to support undocumented workers amid growing fears about the enforcement measures.  KEYT
