COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department announced that the free Concerts in the Park series will return to Chase Palm Park every Thursday in July from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The concerts will feature live music with acts such as The Molly Ringwald Project on July 3, Captain Cardiac and The Coronaries on July 10, The Academy on July 17 and Soul Majestic on July 24.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Summer Solstice is in the final stretch for its parade on June 21 as volunteers work at the Workshop at the corner of Ortega and Garden Street — help is needed to build floats, costumes, and art around the Wild Things theme — and community members are invited to join and learn new skills. This event offers a chance for locals to contribute to a creative tradition while preparing for the upcoming parade.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara Airport has partnered with Pacific Pride Foundation to promote Pride Month with a new banner hanging outside, and passengers will see related ads and events in the terminal until the end of August—The Pacific Pride Festival will take place on Aug. 23 at Chase Palm Park with free live performances, food and vendors.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara High schools celebrated the class of 2025 on Thursday evening at San Marcos and Dos Pueblos High Schools—students walked through the stadium and changed their tassels as parents cheered, with about 788 graduates headed to Santa Barbara City College next year.  KEYT
  • UC Santa Barbara announced its top student honors during Commencement week—Cassidy Miller won the Thomas More Storke Award for Excellence, while Ethan Lord and Max McKinney received the Jeremy D. Friedman and Alyce Marita Whitted Memorial Awards respectively. The award ceremony for all honorees will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in Corwin Pavilion.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over 90 environmental, tribal, and community groups submitted a letter last week asking the Forest Service to scale back its Wildfire Risk Reduction Project and prepare a full Environmental Impact Statement for Los Padres National Forest. The groups warned that the plan—covering 90,796 acres and affecting recreation and critical habitat—could harm endangered species and local cultural sites.  Edhat

  • Santa Barbara City Councilmember Meagan Harmon was unanimously elected chair of the California Coastal Commission at a meeting in San Diego—she has served on the Council since 2019 representing District 6—and Caryl Hart was elected vice chair; both will serve until December.  KEYT
