COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara’s Waterfront and Parks and Recreation departments will host the annual Fourth of July celebration on July 4 featuring live music, dance performances, a street fair with food vendors, and key road closures including Stearns Wharf from 3:30 p.m. to allow the festivities to expand onto state streets; the day will end with a 20-minute fireworks display around 9 p.m. at West Beach followed by a beach cleanup on July 5 with Santa Barbara Channelkeeper offering gloves and buckets.  Noozhawk
  • The Downtown Club at 632 East Cañon Perdido Street will host Carnival for the Kids during Fiesta week from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 31 through Sunday, August 3—organized by Christiansen Amusement, the carnival will feature rides and games for families.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara was chosen for Bloomberg Philanthropies’ $100k Asphalt Art Grant to install a custom asphalt art design with safety improvements at the State and Carrillo streets intersection, celebrating Mexican and Mixteco art and culture. The city will receive technical support from Bloomberg Associates + help from local partners to ensure the intersection becomes safer for pedestrians and cyclists.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Bank of America named Jacky Holler as the new Market Executive for Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. She will work with local market leaders — including market president Midge Campbell-Thomas—to serve households, businesses and the community and brings over 30 years of financial experience.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The SBCC Foundation awarded 1,187,618 dollars in scholarships to over 900 SBCC students for the 2025 to 2026 academic year, a significant increase from last year. Recipients such as Kaylee Bosetti and Brady Ward will attend UCLA in the fall—showing strong community support for education.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara City Council voted 7-0 Tuesday to approve new high fire hazard maps—rules require all new construction to follow the California Building Code and mandate thinning of vegetation within 30 to 150 feet of buildings to lower fire risk. The council also approved a $577 million city budget with $2 million from reserves for affordable housing—resulting in a 4-3 vote and concerns about future deficits.  Noozhawk

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County residents face rising rents as the median cost for a one-bedroom nears $3,000 and a two-bedroom climbs to $3,850—forcing locals, including teacher Devon Cabelli and Isla Vista students, to cope with cramped, substandard living conditions. The 2025 Rental Housing Survey shows these increases since 2016 are straining housing affordability and quality.  Noozhawk
