COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Solvang gave a $450,000 grant to build a new aquatic complex at Santa Ynez High School so local residents can finally use a regulated pool—this project builds on a $3.5M fund that still needs about $10M. Carpinteria will raise nearly $1 million to repair its community pool—while in Santa Barbara, designs are underway for a replacement at Ortega Park as part of a $30 million park upgrade.  Santa Barbara Independent

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 8:11 a.m. on June 18, two vehicles collided at the intersection of Cathedral Oaks Road and N. San Marcos Road near Goleta causing at least one injury — officials reported both vehicles suffered major damage and the traffic signal near a yellow preschool building was affected.  Edhat

  • Marisella, a modern Californian restaurant serving a seafood-forward menu led by chef Danny Grant, will open on June 26 at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara — replacing Angel Oak, which previously earned acclaim for its dishes.  Edhat
  • Buellton winemaker Blair Pence asked the court to let his class-action lawsuit move forward as he claims the strong pot odor from Westcoast Farms has hurt his tasting room and lowered nearby property values.   • Santa Barbara police warned residents on June 17th about a scam where text messages falsely claim unpaid parking tickets may lead to arrest — the department stressed it never sends citations by text — and urged people to ignore links and report any suspicious messages.  Edhat

  • Santa Barbara will host its annual Summer Solstice festivities starting Friday, June 20 at Alameda Park with art workshops, live music, and a locals’ night that leads to a Saturday parade at noon and festival events on Sunday. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Tuesday budget hearing, Santa Barbara County Supervisors disbanded the sheriff’s cannabis enforcement team by reassigning two deputies to narcotics and changing the remaining deputy role into a felony warrant detective position after cannabis tax revenue dropped from $15.7 million to $5.4 million. The board also restored funding for business licensing and tax audits while allocating $240,000 to help families get mental health services from the Immigrant Legal Defense Center — a move intended to use funds more efficiently.  KEYT
  • Santa Barbara City Council adopted a two-year budget in a 4—3 vote amid concerns over a projected $1.6 million deficit. The plan allocates $2 million per year from reserves for the affordable housing trust fund and adjusts $100,000 for a new wildland fire suppression district as officials warn future federal cuts could tighten finances.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara City Council approved a new map of Fire Hazard Zones on June 17 and gave $100,000 to start a wildfire prevention district—this rule will require builders to follow Chapter 7A of the California Building Code.
