COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County will host the 2025 UBGC Golf Tournament, presented by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, on Monday, July 21 at the Ranch Course at Alisal Ranch. All proceeds from the tournament will support programs for about 3,600 local youth while teams enjoy a shamble-style round, a one-night stay at the Chumash Casino Resort, shuttle service, a catered lunch, a cocktail hour & a poolside awards dinner.  Noozhawk
  • A group from the Red de Defensa Transgénero de Santa Bárbara is hosting today’s rally, Orgullosxs y Libres: Unidas por el Poder Trans, at 11 a.m. outside the County Courthouse — the event urges supporters to bring signs and listen to personal testimonies amid ongoing attacks on trans rights.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Trapeze and Unite to Light will host Fly Into the Light: A Summer Solstice Celebration on June 28, featuring free flying trapeze experiences, tacos, and music to raise awareness about global energy access. The event runs from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at Plaza Vera Cruz at 131 E Haley St — Unite to Light will also launch a pilot project with Dragon Q Energy to boost clean energy in our community.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • TV Santa Barbara celebrated its 50th anniversary on June 13 with events at the Community Environmental Council Building and SOhO that featured a cocktail hour, awards dinner, live auction, and 70s dance party. Founder Ira Opper recounted the channel’s local news history — and Executive Director Erik Davis led the community celebration.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Summer Solstice 2025 festival started Friday with a Wild World theme and workers finished setting up for today's parade at a community arts workshop; local artists shared ideas for today's parade — featuring recycled costumes. The festival will end Sunday with a kid zone.  KEYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UCSB celebrated the inaugural graduation of 20 PROPEL scholars whose donor-funded program helps social science majors complete a four-year plan and access career guidance — officials said the event underscored the program’s early success and set the stage for future support for students.  Noozhawk
  • David Marshall will serve as UCSB's interim chancellor starting July 15 as Chancellor Henry T. Yang will step down after a 31-year tenure. Marshall, a veteran professor at UCSB—who has held key leadership roles—will guide the campus through the transition while the search for a permanent chancellor continues.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Community Environmental Council and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper are hosting the 4th Annual Plastic-Free Expo on June 25 from 6:30—8 p.m. at CEC's Environmental Hub on State Street to share ways to cut single-use plastics and help our environment.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ICE agents were recorded in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Santa Maria on June 18 and 19 arresting individuals who were collecting recyclables. Local officials and immigration advocates said the actions raised fear in communities and urged residents to stay alert — with a community defense training set for Monday, June 23.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Emma Myall is now the permanent head coach of UC Santa Barbara women's water polo after serving as interim coach this season and leading the team to a 16 to 13 record against ranked opponents — Director of Athletics Kelly Barsky said Myall joined as an assistant in 2024 and will build on her success in upcoming seasons.  Santa Barbara Independent
