ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • 15-year-old Dos Pueblos High School student Alex Wood, who earned his lifeguard certification on May 18 and lost his life in a Highway 1 car crash that killed his two friends, was commemorated on Saturday at Goleta Beach as hundreds remembered his kindness and bravery—qualities his family and friends cherished.  Noozhawk

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The student team that created RazeMath uses AI to give college students custom math help and won first place at UCSB's 26th Annual New Venture Competition, earning $10,000 in cash and prizes. Leaders Nico Lehner and Evan McCall will seek more funding and plan to expand into computer science and K-12 education in the coming years — they worked hard to refine their platform by gathering input from over 300 math faculty.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara Hives and CARP Café—born from a single Flow Hive purchase during a drought—has grown to offer local honey, sourdough bread, and unique treats at its Carpinteria shop.   • Santa Barbara man Peter Aibor Jeschke — a former tennis coach — pleaded guilty to engaging in multiple sexual acts with a teenage girl over 20 years ago and was sentenced last month to 280 days in jail, probation, a 10-year protective order, and registration as a sex offender.  Noozhawk

CULTURE NEWS

  • Music Academy of the West’s annual PercussionFest is moving from its small on-campus venue to The Granada Theatre on Thursday, July 3 to accommodate a larger audience. The event will feature former Police drummer Stewart Copeland debuting his piece The Bells—commissioned for the Juilliard Percussion Ensemble—and percussionist Andy Akiho performing his new work Sculptures.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Thousands gathered along Santa Barbara and Ortega streets for the 51st annual Summer Solstice Parade which began on Saturday at 12 p.m. and featured a Wild World theme with colorful floats and costumes— the festival officially wraps up today.  KEYT
  • UCSB's Launch Pad is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a free Summer Reading Series at the Studio Theater. The series begins with 'Greek Tragedy' on Thursday, June 26 at 7 p.m., continues with 'Standing Still' on July 3, and ends with 'The Wildes' on July 10 at 7 p.m.—a tragicomedy about Oscar Wilde and his little-known family.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UCSB researchers have created a smartphone app that offers daily challenges and guided audio lessons—helping users ask more questions and try new routines to build their curiosity. In a three-week study, participants showed higher curiosity and lower boredom, and the team plans to offer the app to undergraduates and older adults soon.  Noozhawk
  • Parents are concerned about Carpinteria Family School’s future as the district’s budget proposal funds only one teacher—forcing the elimination of kindergarten through third grade to help save $360,000 amid declining enrollments and rising dual language participation. The school board will decide Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Carpinteria City Hall whether to reconfigure the school to serve only fourth- and fifth-grade students for the next school year.  Noozhawk
