- ➤ On Tuesday morning, June 24th, drivers faced a heavy traffic jam when over 300 sheep escaped near Mountain Drive in Santa Barbara—CHP officers and the owner worked quickly to guide the flock back to their pen. Edhat
- ➤ Children under 18 can receive a free, nutritious lunch as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program at the Central Library plaza, available Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. The program runs from June 16 to August 15 and includes special events on most days while being provided by the Santa Barbara Unified School District — note that no lunches will be served on Independence Day. - ➤ Edgar Bribiescapuga—who fired at a Goleta homeowner during a Thanksgiving Day robbery on November 23—was sentenced to 26 years in state prison by a Santa Barbara jury on May 27 after deputies arrested him during a high-speed chase. KEYT

- ➤ Scientist-turned-artist Ethan Estess will speak at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series on Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m. He will explain how his work connects ocean pollution with global tuna fisheries — and a pre-lecture reception for SBMM members will run from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. Noozhawk

- ➤ A Seal Watch volunteer reported that after the Carpinteria beach opened on June 1, very few harbor seals have been seen, and she urged the City Council to close the 1,500-foot beach year round — a step she said would help protect the seals and call for new signage to guide visitors. - ➤ The Community Environmental Council, also known as CEC, launched Central Coast AgLink—a free program that gives farmers, ranchers and land stewards personalized support to start climate-smart projects and get help finding funding and resources. - ➤ On Wednesday, June 25, Santa Barbara County held an emergency drill at Direct Relief headquarters in Goleta to honor the 100th anniversary of the 1925 earthquake—county agencies including the Emergency Management Office, Sheriff’s Office and Search Dog Foundation participated to improve response readiness. A centennial commemoration ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, June 28 on State Street and a Day of Remembrance will take place on June 29 to further engage locals in disaster preparedness. Edhat

Mike Lee revised a federal budget bill provision that will only allow the sale of public lands near population centers, stopping plans to sell millions of acres including parts of the Los Padres National Forest for housing developments. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins rescinded the 2001 Roadless Rule—a change that may boost road construction and timber harvest on nearly 59 million acres and increase wildfire risks for nearby communities.
