COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amid ICE raids on the Central Coast, CARE4Paws and Santa Barbara County Animal Services have shared plans to help pet families keep their animals safe—owners are urged to prepare supplies, documents and a quick evacuation route—so that pets are not left behind during sudden detentions or deportations.  Noozhawk

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department rescued a 26-year-old hiker suffering from dehydration on Cathedral Peak Trail just before 2:15 p.m. and airlifted him to Cottage Hospital—this was the second heat-related hiking incident that day.  KEYT
  • On Friday, Coast Guard watchstanders responded at 10:30 a.m. when a man with severe chest pains needed medevac from an oil rig 35 miles offshore; an MH-60 Jayhawk from Air Station Ventura flew him to Camarillo Airport—he was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.  KSBY

  • Leah opened The Little Things Bakery on the Mesa after caring for her grandfather and mother, saying that baking small treats helps lift spirits. The bakery makes custom cakes that honor local dessert traditions—each cake carrying a piece of Santa Barbara's history.  Edhat

CRIME NEWS

  • Santa Barbara police arrested a 22-year-old man on Friday for damaging a Harbor Kiosk arm with a GMC truck around 7:10 p.m.—he is also linked to a previous assault that left a man with a hand laceration.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 18th, 1925, Hotel Californian opened with 100 rooms offering fresh + salt-water baths and soundproof construction, but a strong earthquake on June 29th, 1925 caused the building to collapse and forced guests to flee. The hotel was later reinforced and rebuilt in a new style before reopening on April 17th, 1926.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Art Association donated $5,000 to the Visual Arts and Design Academy at Santa Barbara High School to help young students with art supplies—after touring the classrooms, the board said it will provide annual support.  Noozhawk

  • Since the late 1800s, the Senegal Date Palm has graced our gardens and parks with its many trunks and long, bright-green fronds that create a tropical look. The tree thrives in our Mediterranean climate—commonly seen in well-known public spaces and adding a striking focal point to Santa Barbara’s outdoors.  Edhat
  • The Community Environmental Council launched Central Coast AgLink, a free program that helps local farmers, ranchers and land stewards access funding and technical support for climate-smart practices. In its first two weeks, the program received 15 sign-ups — a promising sign of local demand for enhanced agricultural resilience.  Edhat
