Good morning, Santa Barbara. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 3rd of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local residents and officials gathered on the steps of the Santa Barbara Mission for a prayer service that remembered the 11 victims of the 1925 earthquake. At 3 p.m. church bells rang as community leaders, including City Councilmember Kristen Sneddon and state official Gunnar Langenhuizen, led the commemorative event.  Noozhawk
  • Today, officials are building a large sand berm at West Beach for the 4th of July fireworks show that will draw over 20,000 people to the waterfront and many more from nearby neighborhoods. Street closures on Cabrillo Boulevard, a Montecito parade starting at 11:30 a.m., and a Goleta drone show at Dos Pueblos High School with gates opening at 6 are planned, and public safety will be maintained by local police and fire services (unauthorized fireworks remain banned in several neighboring areas).  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michelin’s 2025 guide recognized seven Central Coast restaurants, with six earning one star and Aubergine in Carmel-by-the-Sea earning two stars—showing a mix of dining styles from omakase to French bistros. The awards boost local pride and may draw more diners to favorites like Silvers Omakase in Santa Barbara—highlighting the region’s strong food culture.  Edhat
  • The Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation will host a free, family-friendly outdoor concert tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Gardens—featuring the 80-member Prime Time Band playing patriotic tunes to honor military service.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara County Grand Jury report finds that the housing shortage for low- and moderate-income residents on the South Coast has reached crisis levels. Local officials must cut barriers—high land costs, strict zoning, and the rise in short-term rentals—to build more affordable homes and meet planning goals.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara County completed the transition of all seven fire departments and medical 9-1-1 calls to the new Regional Fire Communications Center at 4406 Cathedral Oaks Road on June 30th. Officials say the center centralizes dispatch for several agencies and will improve emergency response in the region.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara County Association of Governments approved $4.3 million in Measure A funding to support bicycle, pedestrian and Safe Routes to School projects in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta and Isla Vista—allocating about $2.3 million for multipurpose paths, crosswalks and sidewalks—and nearly $2 million to improve safety for students over the next few years.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • State legislators approved two bills on July 1 that change how housing projects in Santa Barbara are evaluated under the California Environmental Quality Act to secure the state budget. The bills allow local governments to do a shorter review and require urban infill mapping by July 2027 (a measure that may speed housing development) while drawing criticism from environmental groups.  Santa Barbara Independent
